I'm new to the forum so hello. I have a ceed sw new in March 08 and its been back under warranty for the handbrake not holding. Its back to the dealers on Monday for another go at it. The problem is that even with a mighty tug on the lever the brake struggles to hold on a slope. Not only that, but it works better on the left (kerbside if your'e in Britain) than the right. All questions for the dealer. I tow a caravan, so the handbrake has to work. I'll let you know how I get on. By the way I also get the hesitation, hunting or other description of the dithering that the management system seems to do on very small throttle openings. As someone said of a Ford I used to own "its a feature of the car".

Alan, does your handbrake hit a stop at the top of its travel - mine does andat that point it's barely holding the car - this is only gonna get worse as the brakes wear.
There is a thread on here somewhere that describes how to adjust the travel on the hand brake yourself. Involves accessing the adjuster via the bottom of the box below the centre armrest - did mine and it now holds on the fourth click

Bunker, thats fine and it's good that it works but it's a new car, we shouldn't have to do this sort of thing ourselves. We should be able to say to the dealer; tihis isn't right and the dealer should agree and fix it. I didn't buy a new car with 7 years warranty to have to adjust the handbrake myself - I doubt that such an adjustment could be called a user adjustment or regular maintenance anyway.

Agreed, but it only takes a matter of minutes. Life has taught me that nothing is as it should be, and at the end of the day it takes far less effort and cost (time / money / aggravation) than having it looked at by a dealer
Oh, and it got me out of earshot of the missus for a bit
Hi All
This appears to be a common fault with the Ceed. My car is the same and the handbrake needs to be at the top to have any chance of holding the car on a hill.
Laugh, but I've actually chased my car a few times on a gentle slope as the car has been rolling away. If you ask me it's dangerous!
I notice that Auto Express wrote about this about 8 months ago as they have a Ceed on long term test.
Mine has been like it from new and in my opinion should be put right by KIA. It's just a case of waiting until first service for me and remembering to pull the handbrake up fully........which is not the way a handbrake should work!
