Default USB stereo restrictions

* I have a 4Gb memory stick. Apparently, only the first ~170 songs can be read by my KIA Ceed stereo.

* I can't change the currently playing album using the buttons on the steering wheel. It would be cool to use the [next channel]/[previous channel] buttons but they are useless in USB mode.

Do you experience the same unpleasant behaviours ?
Is there a way to upgrade the stereo system software (in this case, are new versions available)?

The buttons on the stering wheel will select the next track but for folder/Album navigation you need to use the controls on the head unit.

I believe the total tracks the USB can read is 200.

I have a 4Gb Sandisk, one of these in fact and I have no issues at all.

I think there 'may' be a limit as to the number of songs you can have in any one folder / directory, but if you nest them into albums everything should be fine

I must have more than 170 songs on mine as the bloody thing is full to the brim.

Just been outside to check and it certainly supports more than 200 tracks, but the track number resets to 1 after each 200th track (if that makes sense) in other words, track 201 is shown as track 1 and so on.

ps. kept skipping through the albums as far as 'R' which was well over 600 tracks and I gave up..

One more thing, those interested in aesthetics might like to note that the Sandisk units light up when in operation and it's exactly the same colour as the dash illumination

I dont think there is a limit, not one your gonna bump into right away atleast.
Its true that the car can only write a specific amout of chars. in the display, but that is not the limit.

In my Ceed i have hooked up a 160 GB western digital 2.5" drive with over 10.000 tracks on it. The USB connector dont have enough juice for this but a 12v to USB power adaptor and a USB split cable does magic.

There are two drawback with this solution:
1) each time you turn of the car so does the drive, resulting in lost track position, so you really only have the option to listen to the tracks at random. but thats fine with me.

2) It takes about 35 seconds before the car read all the folder information from the drive, and it dosnt start playing before it read all the information.

If you kept power on to the drive would it retain track position?

Another drawback of using USB over AUX or the dual iPod connection is the lack of gapless mp3 playback. This doesn't apply to everyone, but anyone who listens to mix CDs, live CDs, anything where there is continuous music without pauses will find that using USB media (or indeed a data CD of MP3s) results in the 2 second pause between tracks. It's a personal pet hate of mine
