tim_p I cannot agree with you more. I have never had a car that I had any problem engaging a gear in (during normal operations). At least since the synchronized gearboxes saw the light of the days. I'm not "that" old but I have driven my fair chair of really old cars. Back to reality, it seems that all cee'd at least have the problem. According to the shop you cannot adjust the reverse gear. I think that we are out in the cold here. Our only rescue would be that Kia crawled to the cross and replaced gearboxes...

Yep, today I went to reverse off drive which has slight upwards incline.

Initially the clogs meant I could move - 1 foot - before the embarassing 'clink' as it popped out forcing me to rapidly hit brake before car slides down into garage door.

At least with my 2001 pug, I get resistance when it won't let me have reverse, so I know to release clutch and press the gas a bit to reset the clogs a bit for another try.

Ceed reverse is like a black hole, and not a pleasurable one.

experience the same with the reverse engaging; my solution is to keep pushing the leaver while releasing the cluch. if not engaged properly it will definitely pop in and no more problems and funny hhhrrrrrrr sounds )

Further more I can shift to the first gear at less then 5 km/h. I have also driven hyundai accent, which normally shifts to lower gears ar higher speeds (eg. to 2nd at 30 or 40 km/h). It there something wrong with my transmission?

Thanks in advance!

Kia cee'd 1.6, gasoline engine, manual transmission, bought in summer 2007
I will order a 1.6 CRDi HB next Monday. Today I had another test drive, and found no problem with gearshift. I can shift down to 2nd gear at 40km/h, althouth there is a little more resisitance than usual in this case. Everything is smooth.
I have no complain about the gearbox according to the short drive, but the steering wheel is somehow too light (compared to Focus or Golf), though it is very accurate.
The engine is brilliant.

...after warming up the shifting is much smoother, this might have to do with the winter setting in here...
the steering felt very light compared to my previous corolla but after a month I started to get used to it...something like going from no power steering to having one...maybe not that extreme
