Took delivery of my Black Ceed 1.6 crdi LS last thursday.Initial impressions are very good, but I am a little confused about the automatic climate control.
When the Auto button is pressed are there any other lights showing, eg the A/C one. Is the compressor running all the time, ie emitting cold air or does it switch on and off depending on the temperature in the car. If it is on all the time what will happen in the winter when heat is required.
The reason I am asking is that when I press Auto, the only air entering the car is via the windscreen vents. When I press the mode button for the floor air does come out those vents but when I press the face level one no air comes out of those vents. I am wondering if I should revisit the garage to complain.
What order do the vents open in your cars when auto is pressed (on a hot day). Hope you can help, thanks.
The climate control, if left to auto, controls not only the temperature but the air volume and distribution.
When you dictate which vents to use you will also need to set the fan speed as it will stay at the speed that the auto was controlling it at.
The AC does work continuously, cutting in % out as required when in auto.
If you were to select the screen defrost, you will notice the air speed increase, the AC will run (for dehumidification) and the screen vent will be selected, you will need to select the temperature.
With mine, I now leave the unit in Auto but I turn off the AC unless the outside temperature is high. o turn the AC off just press the AC button, this will leave just the auto light on.
Hope that explains it all....It is in the manual but it is not very clear.

Yes the handbook is a little confusing, you have confirmed what I thought about the A/C cycling on and off, and this morning was a little cold in South Lincs and on the first drive of the morning hot air was coming in the car.
Can you check something for me. When you first start the car on a hot day (ie inside of car is very hot) with Auto button pressed which vents does air come out of, on my car it is only the vents to the screen, consequently the temperature in the car hardly decreases.
Also with A/c switched off with OFF button, and then you press the button for the face vents does air actually come out of the face vents (I think it should?) on my car no air comes out, although the fan is running.
This will help me greatly in deciding if a visit to the dealer is required, thanks.

When the inside of the vehicle is hot and the Aircon is set to Auto (with Auto light ON & AC light ON) the air will be distributed where the unit wants it to be distributed, mainly it will come out of the screen vents as this will force the cooled air up, which in turn (thermal dynamics) will drop to the floor as the hotter air will tend to rise. This will give you the best cooling effect. If the cooled air was distributed via the footwell vents it would take much longer for the hot air to be removed (stratification will occur).

If you select the 'Face' vents, you will need to rotate the right hand dial (Fan Speed) to the speed that you require, it will normally be set automatically at a low speed. When you switch back to auto the speed will decrease, if you then reselect 'face' you will need to again adjust the fan speed as it does not remember it!!
It is a bit of a niggle, but I find that if you leave 'Auto' = ON, 'AC' = OFF, everything works as it should, and it is very quiet. If you need demist, just select demist, if you need AC turn the AC to ON.
Hope that helps you.

Thanks for your advice, which makes sense. However I am still thinking my unit is faulty, for example today it is sunny and about 17 degrees C outside. Parked car in supermarket car park, when I returned the inside was quite hot as was left in the sun, turned up the temp dial from 15.5 to 19C and hot air started coming out of the vents.!
So far 200 miles at mpg of 48.5, mixed driving.

I'm kinda with ex-nissan here, there is definitely something strange about the behaviour of the system. I noticed it both in the 3 day test car and now mine. It behaves differently to other cars I'm used to, a previous Audi and a current Merc. I usually end up sticking it on 'low' to get cold air which is preferable to the warm the system decides to push out. Seems to do it if the demand temp is less than the outside temp and it almost seems to want to match the outside rather than adjust to the demand. Difficult to describe and I've not actually made any notes (life's too short!) on the details but it's more a gut feeling rather than hard evidence.
I'm from the Audi camp before and I also think that there is something fishy about the whole thing. I tend to feel warm and I have to put the temp to at least 19 degrees celcius to get at least a bit comfortable. You must also wait quite a while before the cold air begins to flow. From what I have heard Audi, and probably all german cars, have great AC's. I have only owned Audi's before and doesn't have anything to compare with. In the Audi's I have allways put the AC on 22 degress and forgot he whole thing.
well.... i wouldn't worry that much.
if you leave the car in the sun, or it's very hot outside, it takes a while until cold air comes in.
the explanation is pretty simple - all components of the A/C unit, and air ducts are hot, so the first blow that comes out of the vents is hot. After a little while, when the A/C unit starts working within normal parameters, it sends cold air, but that air has to cool the air ducts (which are made of plastic... ) before being able to cool the car interior.
