turbo update and loud whistle

Hi everyone. My name is David and i'm from Portugal.
The reason i'm making this post is regarding my kia ceed scoupe(pro ceed) 1.6 CRDI, 115hp from 2008 with 50000kms.
When i was making the annual maintenance at kia, they had to replace the poly accessories belt (i think it's the correct translation) that was defective and then they made a ECU upgrade at turbo level that was overdue. After, when i went to pick up the car i noticed a high whistle in turbo when accelerating. I made the claim and they told me it it was the Particle filter that was auto-regenerating. I accepted the answer and ater a few months i went for the annual maintenance i said the same thing, loud whistle in turbo. They performed the maintenance and after, told me it was a normal sound. 2 days after, the turbo broken living white noise behind. I call the kia warranty and it was taken to the shop. Turbo was replaced and after a few days broken again. Now, after almost 18 months, this happend in september 2012, it has broken 4 turbos, 5 if you count the original one. Because kia was saying that was only a turbo problem, without anymore confidence in their services, i took the car to a bosch shop and now they are saying that they have to unmount the engine, prices from 2000 up to 4500€.
Kia has revoked my warranty because i made a maintenance outside kia with 2 months after the date.
I don´t know what to do, you can imagine how i fill.
I appeal for your support and experience. Thank you in advanced.

Sorry to hear your problems.

Your car does NOT have a DPF and you should maybe contact Kia customer services and have it out with them. I worry that you might be screwed on the warranty front, as you got it serviced elsewhere, but then again if it was all done properly then you should still be covered.

It's amazing how many dealers think these cars have DPF's.

There must be something else wrong which is killing all of the turbo's!

Al is correct for the UK regarding DPF's, they did not start fitting them until late 2010, they became mandatory across Europe from Jan 2011 but some countries required them before this date, Portugal may have been one of them.

But the bottom line is the car should not be breaking turbos, there must be another problem that is causing them to break.

Unfortunately you have scored an own goal letting the service over run by 2 months, even if it had been a Kia service the same would have applied. All manufacturers have a small limit they allow you to be late, 2 months is way outside. Warranties are a 2 way contract, you have to maintain the car to the T & C's and then the manufacturer will fix it, you have clearly broken your side of the deal.

SWCeed, yes your right regarding the 2 months but the car only has 50000kms on it. It's stupid that if i only make 10kms in a year, i have to do the annual maintenance to keep the warranty running...
And my car was serviced in a kia official dealer when they replaced the turbo, i took the car to another shop because they kept saying it was a turbo problem, and i'm going to the 5th turbo. If the car was repaired by them, they have an obligation i think...

All manufacturers stipulate a maximum time or distance for service intervals (unless it has variable servicing like for example BMW). If you do a low mileage that still means servicing by the time specified. I do 7000 miles a year and my car requires a service every 12 months or 10000 miles. I have it done every 12 months, its not a big deal. I knew about it when I bought the car and budgeted for it. If you are not prepared to keep to the manufacturers schedule be prepared to loose your warranty.

I only delayed the maintenance for 2 months because i needed the car for vacations. i bought the car in 19 sept and went to service maintenance in 8th November. Because i had to let the car for service for a full day, i only could leave it at that time. And i only made 7000kms that year.
But what i needed now was a solution for repairing the car. Maybe one of the kia owners had passed for the same and had an opinion or sugestion regarding this matter.
I'm really desperate.
Thank you all for your replys

Your only way forward is to contact Kia Customer services. I cannot believe that Kia would pay the garage to fit 4 replacement turbo's under warranty and not question the garage, the garage will need approval from Kia before they do work of this type of value.

Seems to me the garage are just making up a story to keep you happy. If turbo's keep failing there is a reason and the manufacturer will want to sort that rather than simply paying the garage to fit new ones on a regular basis.

With regard to your warranty its all been said. Not being able to find time is not a valid excuse, in truth there is no valid excuse. If you don't meet the T & C's its goodbye warranty and any court in the land would agree.

Because they said that the car is out of warranty, i'm paying for all the turbos! And again, they told me it was a turbo problem, and asked me to replace it again, at my cost. I said no and took it to another shop, not kia representative. I'm desperate because i've spent money on 4 turbos, plus all the trouble i've been, i don't have the car since september of 2012... you can imagine whar i've passed this couple of months...

Just to check the full story, since September 2012 (17 month ago) you have paid to have 4 new turbo's fitted and are now being told it needs a 5th and in that time you have had little use of your car.

If the above is correct I suggest instead of paying for another turbo you pay for an expert to strip and inspect your car and then pay for a solicitor experienced in motoring claims of this type to represent you in court.

All car repairs carry a warranty on parts and workmanship, normally 12 months. Why you have simply paid them each time to fit an expensive new turbo (which is a part that normally lasts the life of the car) is beyond my understanding.

I don't know what is the issue here...
4 new turbos... any turbo can be repaired for at most 350€, if it needs a new core.
And before repairing any new part has a 2 year warranty by Portuguese law.

Has any of the mechanics checked the oil feed? What oil do you use?
You are being taken by a fool... and you letting them do it.

I agree with you FrEakZoldE but I have said this before on this forum on 02-06-2014 that the fitter is on bonus and has no time to check the oil flow to the turbo
Its a hard job to check the oil flow for you have to run the engine and not just turn over on the starter motor and oil is flying everywhere

but the garage has an obligation to find the fault, rather than just keep replacing the damaged part.

Dave.pt - speak to KIA customer services. Your dealer is failing to resolve the problem, the reason they keep swapping the turbo is you keep paying them. If it was done under warranty KIA would get your car looked at by a different garage to find the fault.

Good luck mate, hope you get something sorted.

Tell us this, if the garage said the problem was not with the turbo why did you buy several.

But in an earlier post you said the garage told you it was a turbo problem.

Make your mind up.

Regardless, buying parts and then getting a garage to fit them is a very dangerous path to take. If the part fails or does not cure the issue it usually end up with a almighty argument that the owner looses.

Always let the fitting garage supply parts, you might save a few pounds supplying them yourself but you will probably get loads of hassle, just like you currently have.

derek c and dubster, at this time i took the car to a shop outside kia services and they told me that, after they checked the full oil system, that probably it was the oil pump because there were small parts of the other turbos in the oil system....

I question them why did the first turbo had broken because, after the turbo update and the loud noise in turbo charger, the original turbo was damage and since then it hasn´t stopped... they told me that it was an oil pump malfunction, kia defect part...

At this moment, they cleanned the oil system and carter and are checking the oil pump for damages. After that they are going to put a new turbo... lets see what will happen.

Thank you all for your replys

seven7, in kia shop they kept saying it was a turbo problem and the turbo sellers told it was not... after the 3rd turbo replaced in kias shop, i decided to send it to another shop (bosh car services) where they asked me for 4000€, just to unmount the motor! I said no and sent it to a citroen/peugeot shop and there they told me they had to check the oil system, carter and oil pump and the problem probably wasn´t with ECU turbo update.

And i bought the turbos (brand new) outside kia because a turbo outside kia costs (average) 550€ and in kia, for the same turbo, they ask 1500€! just for the turbo! Thats why i bought it outside kia
