Default 04 Sedona 2.9 steering problems

Hi,
My wife has a 2004 Sedona and recently it's been making some very unhealthy sounding noises when turning and also it's making a whine noise when driving . When turning especially at low speed it makes a horrible groaning noise also the steering feels very heavy when turning at low speed. Our garage has said it needs a new power steering pump at a cost of approx £230 but also might need a new steering rack at a further cost of approx £400 Should we get the pump done first and hope that cures it or are we throwing money down the drain with this and likely to not get it resolved. I certainly don't want to spend upwards of £600 and still find it's not right but I don't really see much of an alternative at the moment

Cheers

Default Just a thought

Had a similar problem after garage botched replacing steering u joint.

Check your power steering fluid level.
Mine went low and was leaking, pum[p got really noisy and car v heavy to steer.
Fine after they topped it up

The u joint is known to wear,
Maybe it may not be the rack causing the reasons why someone would think the rack needed replaling.

I agree with "m my sedona", I actually just replaced a steering intermediate shaft on a 2005 Sedona about a half hour ago. It will definitely cause the steering to feel stiff. As far as the noise goes, how is the fluid level? The noise you are describing sounds like the pump whining due to low fluid. The steering fluid coolers frequently leak. They are located at the bottom of the radiator support.
