02 sedona cranks, but is flooding out?
I'm in possession of a friend's 02 sedona, and I'm trying to get it running for her. So far, the story goes as follows...
She was driving the van at about 70 mph when the engine shut down completely. She coasted to a stop, and was able to restart the engine, but it only ran for approx. one minute before it shut down again. She was unable to restart it until about an hour later, when a friend arrived with a trailer to haul it to a shop. They were able to start it and drive it on to the trailer, but that was the last time it ran.
The local mechanic that worked on it was unable to get it running. The CEL was on, but his snapon scan tool didn't show any stored codes. He replaced the fuel pump, which seems to have accomplished nothing. A call to a Kia dealership yielded the suggestion that the ECU might be bad, given that the CEL was lit, but no codes were retrieved. The mechanic said that he wasn't interested in working on the vehicle any further. At this point, I picked it up.
On the advice of the Kia tech, I secured another ECU (used), with numbers matching the original. Replacing the unit eliminated the CEL, but I didn't get any additional result. The engine will crank, and intermittently fire, until it floods out. After removing the fuel pump relay, I'm able to hold the throttle wide open and get the engine to fire briefly, until it runs out of fuel. I've already replaced the fuel pressure regulator, suspecting that it was stuck and raising the fuel pressure too high. I've also pulled the front timing belt cover off and did a brief inspection of the belt. It looks to be in excellent condition, likely replaced in the last few thousand miles.
I'm really stuck at this point. Due to financial constraints, it's really not feasible to take this thing to the dealership. What should my next step be, short of a retalitory strike against South Korea?
