Default just purchased 2008 LX

Hi everyone,

Just purchased a 2008 LX. It was a leftover from last yr. Bought it for $17k.
Good deal? I have been wanting a minivan for 3 years and have been studying and looking all that time. Couldnt pass up on what I read and the cost of the Sedona. Good choice? What am I in for? Do you have to follow a maintenance schedule like hyundai does (traded in a tucson). The only thing in my test drive I didnt like was the stereo system. Not loud enough and choppy. The volume only went to like 3.5 on the dial. Is that normal?

Anyways, you will be seeing me on and off and look foward to shring the same vehicle.

I don't think so....the volume should go numerically higher than that.

I have/bought a 2006 Sedona LX in April 2007 with only 5k miles on it. I paid 16k cash for it; came to approximately 17k with taxes and DMV fees, so I think it's safe so say you got a good deal on your new 2008 as well.

Our van gets a lot of use - has 33k miles now - and my wife and I have 5 kids ranging in age from 20 months to 13 years. The van is very comfortable and spacious. Power is plentiful and smooth.

We've had a few issues:

1) AC Compressor required a retrofit as per Kia's TSB in order to quiet a "chugga-chugga-chugga" sound that would occur when it was in operation.

2) AC system was mysteriously low on R134a; they discovered two leaks in the hoses and subsequently replaced them and recharged system.

3) Fuel pump made a loud "buzzing" sound; they reseated/reattached it as per a Kia TSB.

4) Brake rotors warped several times - 7k, 15k, 27k - and they were resurfaced every time. Pads were changed at 27k miles and I paid for them, as well as the resurfacing that particular time. Prior to the pad change, the brakes also squealed pretty bad....was pretty embarrassing to have that sound for so many miles in a practically new van.

5) Body molding on the passenger side sliding door started to come off; this was reglued.

6) Passenger side middle seat came out and wouldn't go back in. Dealer put it in and said it was broken and wouldn't come out so they would order a new one at the next service visit. Next service came and they said the seat was fine. WTF???

7) Instrument warning lights (all of them) came on three times so far....just like a pinball machine gone ka-plewey. During this time, the car was in motion and the transmission seemed to go nuts - shifting into a bunch of different gears and having no power at all when I'm depressing the accelerator pedal and trying to maintain speed on the highway - and than shifting by itself into neutral with the revs soaring to 5,000 plus RPM. This was a potentially critical issue; thank God I was able to safely pull over and then turn off and restart van. Issues disappeared. Took to dealer every time....would have it there for 3 to 5 days at a time....NO RENTAL CAR PROVIDED (?!)....had to pay for one out of my own pocket (?!). Couldn't find anything wrong. They reflashed TCM and ECM several times. Tranny now seems reluctant to downshift into lower gear....hangs on to the taller gear too long. Dealer can't find anything wrong. Who knows what will happen now....but it's cause for concern in my opinion.

8) The light on the rear hatch/door works some of the time....other times it won't. Dealer can't figure out why....it always works when it's there.

9) Weatherstripping on the driver's side sliding door came off at the bottom of the leading edge. Dealer said it was fixed but all they did was glue it(?); after 5k miles, it's now 50% off the leading edge of the door. Dealer told me today that they were ordering a new part but ONLY after I complained that this happened earlier and that they said they fixed it before but they obviously didn't to the job right so PLEASE order a new one.

10) Lower glove box latch broke. Was going in and out (sometimes working sometimes not for about 3k miles...now it's dead and won't open). Dealer got it open by now can't get it closed. They ordered a new latch for it today.

All in all we're very happy with the van, but it HAS had it's share of problems and incident #7 above was never really diagnosed properly and therefore not resolved. I fear that it'll rear its head again and maybe cause an accident.

At 33k miles the shocks are noticeably worn and the van now has a "floaty" feel to it on the highway, wallowing over dips in the road in a manner it never did when new. I suspect struts have gone through approximately 50% of their life span. Can't seem to find new struts for them online. Dealer wants to charge $1,800 to install new ones (?!). Dealer also charges $599 for the 30k miles service - which is nothing more than changing some fluids and filters and then performing so "visual inspections." A complete f_cking rip-off if you ask me. Service tech told me today that if it's not done before 35k miles, it'll void my warranty. WTF?! More BS from your typical scamming/cheating car dealership. I swear....they're worse then the guys who don masks/hoods and stick-up banks with submachine guns. Complete thieves!

Would I buy another one? Not off the showroom floor, no. I'd do the same thing I did in 2007 - get one with around 3k to 6k miles on it and pay cash for it. It's a great way to save 7k to 10k off buying one "brand new" off the lot.

By the way - resale value sucks; can't hold a candle to a Honda. Oh well...doesn't cost anywhere near a Honda so it's a give and take.

Had a 2008 Toyota Sienna rental van while our Sedona was at the dealer one time and I was shocked at how thin the doors were on the Sienna compared to the Sedona. Overall, the Sienna felt like a tuna fish can while the Sedona feels like a bank vault. Sedona also has richer looking and feeling interior pieces, as least insofar as my wife and I are concerned. Sedona's V6 is much smoother then the Siennas too, and the Sedona tranny shifts smoother.

Dealer has been a pain in the ass...they're always looking to rip you off so you need to be on your toes and they won't give you a rental car for any warranty work but they WILL give you one for the $599 30k service that you pay out of pocket. I think this is WRONG - they should offer you - the paying customer who bought the damned van in the first place - a rental car whenever the van needs to go in for warranty work...work that is due because of Kia's error(s). If Kia screwed up, then why the hell should I be stuck footing the bill for a rental car when my van is still under warranty?

I think the Toyota Sienna had better build quality though....even though the parts seemed cheaper. With the Sedona, I'm always thinking "Gee...I hope the guy who installed this part did it correctly." I have little confidence in the Kia final assembly process. Our Sedona has squeaks and rattles; the Sienna did not....and the Sienna had 45k miles on it...our Sedona had interior pieces squeaking at 6k miles. But the steel and overall heft/thickness of the Sedona frame and doors inspires a sense of safety that the thin, stamp-metaled feeling Sienna did not.
