Default Help

Hi, hope someone can help.

Walking back to my parked Sedonna diesel 04 today I could see a trail of liquid at the back of the car. On closer inspection it's coming from a twin pipe that's attached to the underside of the car (drivers side) and it appears to be leaking by a bracket above the rear axle. (it's above the rear axle not the axle itself). The liquid is green and at the moment I've got a container perched on the axle catching what's coming out.

There appears to bit a bit of surface corrosion on this bracket where the leak is, can I rub down and seal it with anything ?

Would also like to know what the liquid is and what it does if possible.

Thx

ziggy Mate,
It would seem that you have a leak in your coolant system. Two steel pipes run underneath the car supplying your rear heater box with coolant. This is a common fault on sedonas, the liquid you see is coolant mixture. It costs around £100 to replace the pipes with Kia parts, however some of the lads have replaced the pipes with rubber heater hose and jubilee clipped the hose onto sound pipe.
Make sure you have plenty coolant in your system by removing the filler cap at the top of the engine and make sure your expansion bottle is at least minimum level.

HI Highlander,

Thx for the reply. I'm only using the car sparingly so I'll make sure it's kept topped up until I can sort out something in the new year as I've no spare cash thx to Xmas lol

Also I'd put a container underneath the car to collect the drips, can this be put back into the system or would it be no go if bits of rust are in it. I could always pour it through some kitchwen towel I suppose. Just thinking because it will have anti freeze in it ?

Thx

Go along to morrisons they sell ready-mix 1litre for about a £1 . i wouldn't bother re-using coolant especially as its so cheap.

Ahh OK got a Morrisons nearby so will pop in.

Is there anything I can use to wrap round these pipes to seal the leak prior to being able to fix properly in the new year ?

Thx again

trying to patch pipes can be a bit hit or miss probably you best bet would be to cap off the pipes as suddenly loosing coolant can work out very expensive but if you want to patch you can get tape to wrap around leaky hoses or another option i have used is to only half tighten the pressure cap so the system dosent pressurise and force coolant out of the system

Hi Thx for the info. Just to make sure I'm going to do this right, the top up is via the plastic bottle with the blue cap, and the pressure cap that you half undo is the metal cap with the warning about not opening when hot. The one where the large hose to the rad comes from that doesn't seem to come right off ?

the metal cap does come off you have to turn it further but if you leave it loose the system does not self refill from the plastic tank so you have to top up at the metal one but you would be better clamping off the hoses to the rear heater and running the system pressurised until you can get the time/funds to fix/replace the rear pipes all this means is the rear heater will not work until the pipes are fixed

Thx Glenn,

Sorry one more question (me being thick) when you say clamp off the hoses to the rear heater, how would I do this as they are metal I think and the leak appears to be coming from where they are attached by a clamp of some sort right above the rear axle ?

Thx and sorry for more stupid questions

the pipes are several metal pipes joined by several rubber pipes so its the rubber bits you clamp or possibly bend one round into a u to join up two of the metal pipes so the coolant goes back to the engine
dont worry you are not thick as in my experience thick is not asking the question and making a kickup of a job
