Default 03 lx diesel wont start, ? fuel problem

just got a 2003 uk sedona lx 2.9CRDi diesel, wont start, turns over lovely, just doesn't want to fire up, ? fuel problem?

what sequence should i check on fuel system?

have put a new fuel filter on, tank has been drained and fresh diesel put in (by previous owner). fuel primes upto the filter using the priming pump next to the filter.

has it got an air lock in system? is the fuel pump broken?

what checks can i do?

got an obd2 fault reader but kia diagnostic socket is different, can i get an adapter cable?

my o2 has the same symptoms as yours the usual cause of a crdi not starting is failure of the fuel pump (need to get the pressure in the fuel system checked) the usual indication of pump failure is metal filings in the fuel filter mine is ok for pressure and is now about to enter week three in the garage while they are trying to check the electronics
as for the obd socket there is one to the front right of the engine and also another under the dash on the drivers side i didnt try the underbonnet socket but my friend code reader plugged straight into the one under the dash

i suspect its the fuel pump as i have changed the fuel filter, emptied out the old one into a clean tub and it does appear to have fine light grey filings in it.

what actually goes wrong in the pump? the pump impellor?

awaiting a workshop manual to arrive.

not having worked on a sedona engine before, i take it the fuel pump is run off the cam belt? so i'm guessing i'll need to lock off all the pulleys etc to remove the cambelt and pump assembly.

can the pumps be repaired/refurbished or is it a replacement item needed?

have seen good 2nd hand pumps advertised but its a gamble i'm guessing.

approx price for new pump?

didn't know about the 2nd diagnostic socket under the drivers side, will check in the morning, that may have the standard OBD2 socket so saving me the job of sourcing an adapter cable. ( which i think i have, from the usa!)

filings in the filter does sound like the pump is fubar, diesel pumps have very tight tolerances so can sieze producing the filings then the tolerances go out and the pump cant make enough pressure, pumps can be refurbished but sit down when you get a quote ( try a google for diesel bob or rover ron if i remember correctly) in another thread someone with a pump on its way out found it would only start with a squirt of easy start
also i believe when the pump goes the injectors will need overhauling as well
as for second hand you pays your money and takes your choice i suppose it depends on the price you payed and wether you plan to keep or punt on but yesterday i watched an auto with bells gongs and whistles go on ebay for peanuts the threat of a huge rise in road tax seems to have put used sedona prices into freefall

found dieselbob's, got to get the pump number of it before ringing for a quote for replacement/repair.

just been quoted £2500 + vat (£2937.50) for a new fuel pump on an exchange basis from the main dealer.

will deffo be going down the good quality 2nd hand route now!

u said the injectors may need overhauling, what exactly would that involve?

i also think a new cambelt may as well be fitted while putting on the replacement fuel pump as unsure of exact service history and the service schedule states replacing it at 60,000 miles anyway and mine has done 48,000.

would i need to flush out any other parts of the fuel system ( common rail, HP lines etc) to remove any remaining metal filings?

also, i have managed to pick up a manual which covers the KJ 2.9 TCI diesel engine, is that the same as the 2.9 CRDi?

£2937.50 ouch well i did warn you to be sitting down
overhauling injectors is not a diy job before throwing money at the car i would suggest getting it to a diesel specialist to ensure a full and proper diagnosis but it sounds like you would be as well to shift it on or take out an aftermarket warranty making sure it covers the fuel system wait a week or three and then oh dear mr warranty company my car has gone wrong and you can pay to fix it
as for your manual i dont know to the best of my knowledge the engine has not changed in the different models just the fuel system but its the fuel system info you need
