Default Loss of power

G'Day

My friend has an 03 Carnival that has what i think is a fuel pump/filter problem.

She had a problem where the car would lose power to the point of having to pull over, wait a few minutes then drive away, it seemed to be worse when tank was 1/4 full, they had been using petrol from a suspect source (they have stopped using it now) so i changed the fuel filter and cleaned the course filter, both VERY dirty.

All was well on the next trip aprox 350Km but on the next fill the problem has started again.

I today pulled the pump/filter assy expecting to see the course filter full of crap but all 'apeared' ok

We put injector cleaner in, went for a drive and all seemed fine for about 30 minutes at highway and local speeds then when near home it would not go faster then 40Kph, the tank is about 1/4 full

It idles fine (no missing) it will rev freely sort of, but makes not much real power

My thought is maybe there is somthing up with the fuel pump but i donot want to just start trowing parts at it.

Any other thoughts

Brian

just a shot in the dark but try checking the filler cap breather or next time it looses power try taking off the cap. might not be the cause but dosent cost anything to check
i once heard of a car with a blocked breather and it collapsed the tank!

ps if the fuel you used had crap in it could it have some water aswell if so i seem to remember a splash of methylated spirit added to the fuel will help but do some more research before trying this as i cannot be sure this info is correct

Thanks for the breather tip, i wil give it at try as to the water the injector cleaner claimed to absorb water, but i assumed water would more constant not just after 1/2hour

I recall the metho and water trick as well and am pretty sure it works

Ok,

The problem is still there when the fuel cap is loose enough to allow air in which eliminates the breather cause.

Could it be the pump getting too warm causing this as the problem seems worse when the tank is less than 1/4 full and after driving for a while, although i saw it do it today after driving for 10 minutes, but today was warmer than it has been 31C (87F)

Any other sugestions?
