Default 2002 Sedona Question

For the past month I had had an off and on "Squaling" sound coming from one of the pulley's, but couldn't tell witch one. Most of the time it would slightly squal when I started the van up, then within a minutes would go away. Sounded like some bearing going out. Like I said it was intermitent so very hard to track down.

Was driving to work yesterday and heard, outside this "squalling" pretty loud for a few seconds then it went away. A little ways down the road I heard it again and looked down to see my water temp climbing to the "H", so I immediately pulled over. The van was running when I pulled over, but I could smell a belt burning.

My questions are these:
1. I would imagine the squalling I was hearing yesterday was the water pump seizing, driving up my temp. Does that sound correct?

2. Is the water pump on this model ran by the backside of one of the two accessory belts or the timing belt under the cover?

3. Since it was running when I pulled it over, can I assume the timing belt did not break and screw up any valves in the head?

4. Called my mechanic last night. He said it sounds like a timing belt/water pump replacement. He suggested I purchase the timing belt kit that has the tensioner/bearing/belt. He said he will know more when he takes off the timing cover.

5. I guess what I need is an opinion. Like I said, when I turned off the motor, it was due to heat and a smell of a burnt belt somewhere. I need some opinions as to whether or not any internal damage could have occured even though it ran smooth when I shut it off or if you all think a waterpump/timing belt replacement will fix it.

Thank you all in advance.

For what it is worth, a few years back my timing belt broke on a Renault Encore that I was driving. I had the belt replaced along with a few bent valves. Two days later it broke again with more bent valves. This time we replaced the idler mechanism too. That was what was breaking the belts.
