Default Engine light flicks on under load - 2.9CRDi

When I'm towing my caravan and I have to drop it down to 4th gear under load on a steep'ish hill, if I push it past 2500rpm the yellow engine warning light comes on until I make it up the hill and get back into 5th gear.

It doesn't come on when climbing up hills at slow speed like in 2nd gear as it happily rev's past 3000rpm. It seems like its related to load.

What could be causing this ? Its done it on my last 3 caravan tours over the last 3000miles and otherwise behaves okay ( except the a/c has died yet again !!)

Any clues???

may not be the cause of your problem but i had a similar problem with mine where the light would come on when the engine was working hard (going up hills) my problem was the fuel filter being partially blocked hope this helps

Cheers Glenn, you might be right, it could be fuel system related but I note you have a 2000 model ( non CRDI ).

Mine started doing it in May when towing and its since had a new fuel filter, yet it re-occurred.

It only does it when towing my large caravan on steep hills when I have to drop to 4th and work it hard to maintain 60mph.

It never misfires / jolts etc, its just the light which comes on.

its the nubira thats 2000 my sed is 02 and is a crdi and is also going to get hit by the tax rises but any way another suggestion could be the air sensor in the intake since your problem only happens when working hard it would seem to me that a restriction in the fueling or air flow is the most likely cause of your problem another couple of suggestions could be the egr valve the turbo boost sensor or an electrical glitch would it be possible to get it code read preferably on the move when the fault is happening oh and another off the wall idea could be the air vent into the fuel tank but this is a bit grasping at staws
well anyway best of luck
ttfn glen
ps when my filter started to block performance was fine unless worked hard but after the light came on a few seconds later would start to loose power but if got the balance right the light was on but would still carry on cruising
