Default Oil leak/Oil change

Hi Everyone, have done a search but couldn't find any info, so here goes:

Sedona 04 LE diesel engine

I appear to have an oil leak as there's slowly built up a black mark on my drive underneath the engine. Due to funds I haven't been able to get the car in for a service for months now, so want to change the oil and oil filter myself to hopefully fix the problem.

As a non-mechanic, is this an easy thing for me to do ?

If so a step by step guide would be appreciated along with what make of oil & filter and also how much oil I would need.

Got to make a 200 mile journey shortly so would like to get this change done before I go

This job used to be dead easy on old Fords and the like but this engine seems so squashed in and big I don't want to take on more than I can chew, BUT I am skint at the moment.

Thx in advance

Zig

if you could do a change on an old ford then you can do a sedona the filter is at the front of the engine but a bit of a fiddle to get at since funds are tight get the filter from your nearest motor factor (look in yellow pages) just tell them what you want for what car and they should see you right
ps would advise changing air and fuel filters at the same time

pps a way of tracing oil leaks is to wash the engine let it dry then dust it with talcum powder then run it as the leak starts the talc will stain black making it stand out against the white

Smile Oil & Filter change. What oil??

Alright,
Your engine takes between 8-9 Litres of oil. Kia recomend 10w-30 grade oil to ACEA B4 standard. I couldn't get oil of this spec locally so phoned Kia in Inverness they said they service these cars with semi-synthetic 10w-40 Mmmm, phoned Kia in Paisley they use Mobil1 10w-30 or 5w-30. Who are we to believe when the dealers don't sing from the same sheet.

I popped along to my local Morrisons Petrol station and bought Texaco Havoline 10w-40 ( Meets ACEA B4 spec ) and it was very very reasonably priced.

You will manage no sweat just be sure not to overfill and dip your oil when the engine is hot allowing for a settling down time.

Hi everyone,

Thx for the responses, haven't been able to get back on until now as my computer died.

OK update is that I decided against the 200 mile trip just in case and have been using the car only for 5-10 mile local journeys (about 1 a week). I really need to get this done ASAP as the leak appears to be getting worse and I can see it dripping out when I stop the car.

It appears to be coming from a round cylinder at the bottom of the engine (assume that's the oil filter ? ) I suppose if that's gunked up the oil is forcing it's way out from the seals of it ?

Does the car need to be jacked up or can I get under to do the job without doing this as I don't have any jack other than the one that came with the car ?

The oil I've been topping up with (as recommended by local garage) is 10w40 synthetic based acea a3/b4. Is that OK ?

On a seperate note, I also need to replace my front brake pads. I did this once on my old Maestro so again, I need to ask if it's fairly straightforward to do please.

Thx everyone

if the round cylinder is at the front of the engine it most likely is the filter i did have mine start to undo so make sure it is tight as for the brakes similar idea to a maestro but of you search the forum you will find several threads on doing the job
pete b if i remember correctly did a full disaster story with lots of pictures
