Default check engine & loss of power

I have a 2004 2.9crdi Sedona with 72000 miles on the clock.

The 'check engine' light is now coming on when accelerating. It seems to do so at about 2000 rpm and after it has come on there is no real acceleration any more - it feels like either the engine management system has put it into some emergency mode or the turbo is not being effective.

If the engine is restarted, the light stays off again until you accelerate beyond 2000rpm again.

It does not flash and the handbook implies that it is drivable. In fact I have just had to drive home in it (around 40 miles) and other than no acceleration, it seems quite happy at 70mph.

When the vehicle is stationary, revving the engine does not make the light come on.

I also (and have for some time) get a 'clicking noise' when depressing the accelerator and another one when letting up. Not all the time, but often. It sound to me like some sort of relay behind the dashboard somewhere. Difficult to tell when driving exactly where. Maybe this is connected to the engine light problem ?

Anyone got any ideas before I pass it on to a dealer to look at? It would be nice to get some sort of indications before they try and charge me a lot of money !

Default An update

I have had a local garage read the error codes, and we have the following:

P1119 Inlet Metering Control Abnormal

P1500 Stall Speed (Output rpm)

P1120 APDL SENR1 (E/Goveror)

The last one was apparantly logged three times.

They cleared the codes and suggested a drive it and see what happens.
Needless to say, on the way home the light came on again.

Anyone know anything about the cause of these codes?

Interesting....

The injectors haven't been touched on mine. I've only had it 2 months and done almost 3000 miles.

I have managed to get a lot more details on the error codes and the diagnostics associated with them. Its original Kia information and hopefully will lead to a correct fix.

The local garage can't get to look at it again until next week at the earliest, so if the weather is OK this weekend I may have a look myself.

The tests are generally quite simple. The only ones I cannot realistically do are the engine speed sensor test (but the tacho works and seems to be fed off the same signal) and the fuel pressure test.

I'll keep updating as progress is made. At least its drivable - if I don't accelerate hard the light doesn't come on. I good way of increasing economy !!

By pure chance I found the source of the clicking noise today.

Its the linkages on the gear lever. In fifth gear there is a small amount of fore/aft movement that results in the noise.

Not yet sure what I'm going to do about it.

There seems to be two small 'universal joint' type linkages and its from one of these. Maybe its loose or its general wear and tear - I hope to do more detailed inspection tomorrow.

hi, get the garages to check the diesel pump for copper filings. my dealer told me they used to have a problem with the pumps and they would get contaminated with these filings loss os power etc etc. i had the same thing go on my 307 sw and under warrenty they had to replace the pump injectors etc etc it would have cost £4,000 but it was under warrenty. it didnt even show up on the diagnostic machine they needed to check it manually.

I have 2003 sedona 2,9L Diesel that is having the same problem that you mentioned. The engine light is coming on as I accelerate and loss of acceleration. Did you find a solution to your problem.

Thank you in advance.

Hi, sorry to resurrect this but my Sedona is doing exactly as described. Going to take it for a diagnostic check and fuel filter replacement next week; did the original poster ever find out what the bottom line was on the fault? It'd be much appreciated if any more focused fault was found.

Regards,

Jeff
