Sedona 2.9 diesel automatic throttle problem?

I have a 2003 Sedona L, 2.9 diesel with automatic transmission.

As I was driving in town this morning, the engine suddenly returned to idle. The car consequently slowed down so much I had to pull over. There was almost no response to the throttle any more.

I put it into neutral and tried revving up. It very reluctantly struggled up to 3000 rpm.

After about a minute I tried driving again and it seemed fine. But 10 seconds later the same thing happened again.

Despite being less than a mile from home I had to stop four times and wait for it to decide to respond to the throttle each time.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas as to what might cause this?

I'm quite sure that you have broken air mass meter. I had same symptoms in my carnival when that sensor was broken. Engine didn't rev over 2800 rpm.Engine goes to "safe mode" when that sensor is not working properly. It costs about 90eur. in ebay and very easy to change.
