Default Engine Overheating? 2004 2.9 CRDI

Hi,

Recently my Sedona went into the local kia garage to have the aircon fixed (condenser not working) FOC thank goodness as they where going to charge £500 , anyhow I dont know if this is linked to the problem but the other day I took the kids up into the hills via a small winding road very steep mostly in low gear (2nd), when I got to the carpark at the top I noticed steam coming from under the bonnet on the right hand side as I looked at it from in the cabin close to the windscreen.
Lifted the bonnet and it did seem a bit toasty under there and smelled a bit funny, I decided to see if the big fan at the front was spinning so I started the engine and the fan did nothing I then tried the in car heating......nothing....then tried it cold.....nothing......only when I switched the Aircon on did it spin round.

So Im not sure if the garage have knacked something up or it was the big hill climb that caused the steam, could someone please check theres or perhaps advise if this is normal/ok

Cheers
Pete

The fan on the front of the radiator only works when the air cons on, however the fan behind the radiator should work when the engine gets hot. What was the temperature guage showing when you were going up the hill?
