Default Potential Problem for 2.5l Carnival owners

Okey dokey,

Well I just thought Id make you guys aware of a problem ive just had.

If you look at your engine, on the radiator neck there are two hoses, one goes to the coolant resevior and the other runs down the left side of the air intake and comes to a T joiner which is connected to a hose that comes out of the head area and one that dissapears around the back. Last night the joiner snapped right in the middle and I had coolant trickling out. Of course this was 6pm when there are no dealerships or parts shops open, only my local Bunnings hardware. So off to Bunnings I went and returned home with a 6mm barbed joiner for a drip irrigation system. I filed the barbs down and jammed it into the residual pieces of the joiner. This seemed to work in the interim. I have since ordered the part and will be fitting it tomorrow, along with topping up the coolant.

Suggestion: if you look and see your hoses flopping around like an untrained seal (as mine were) then try and stabilise or secure them in someway, as i think all the bouncing weakened the plastic (naturally).

The location of this thing would lead to the leaking coolant hitting the engine and evaporating (its not the primary system and not under high pressure) so it would be hard to tell unless you really looked.

Anyhoo, there's the hot tip for you, the part costs the grand total of $4.47 from the dealer and they dont know the name of it (they had to go out into the yard and look under the bonnet to figure it out).

If anyone is interested let me know, I will send pics when i get my notebook back next week...................sometime, maybe, hopefully !!

Take it easy

ok after an hour of persuasion, I got the T joiner in, Im thinkin somewhere in the bowels of the Kia factory they have midgets with claw hands just for this sort of job.......thanks Kia for giving me that 5mm of play in the hose to do the job.

Seriously though when trying to extract the remaining part of the joiner, it snapped again, I have revised my theory and think that heat may have had more of a part in this than vibration. Additionally, with my temporary patch in place, I lost about 1Lt of coolant within a day so my advice, keep an eye on this simple little part cause it could cost you in the end.

Any chance of a photo, might help with others wanting to check.
