Exclamation Carnival power loss

Hello everyone!

Could somebody help with this...
My car is 2.9crdi -2002 automatic gearbox and the problem is that it takes only 2800rpm this started suddenly without any warnings... power seems to be normal up to 2000rpm but after that accelerating is really poor I still can normally drive the car in the city but on motorway comes problems. If I put the gaerbox to N or P position and floor the gas pedal it goes allway to 2800rpm and then stays there like there is somekind of rpm limiter I´ve also checked that there is no trouble codes in the system and not any warning lights on..

Hi Vesa,

My wife and all her family are from Finland, how is the weather over there? still cold?

Have not heard of that before, mind you I have not got a diesel. If I was to take a guess though I would say it may have something to do with the throttle position sensor/throttle cable, seems like only a certain voltage is being read from that sensor and so rpm only go to 2800. Maybe someone else can provide some input.

BTW which part of Finland do you live in?

Hi cpapashley,

We have very nice sunny spring weather here +2 celscius. I live here in southern part of Finland.

Could it be Air mass meter?? I've heard that in VW diesel broken air mass meter limits the rpm to 4000rpm. Does anyone know is it possible to measure that mass meter from the connector pins that is it damaged or not? I also checked the gas pedal signal with Scantool and it seem to work properly 0-100%. Also if I disconnect the air mass meter connector it doesn't affect at all. How many other sensors there are witch could be broken? Where are you living?

+2C , I think we might hit that for a few minutes each year in the middle of winter, I live in sunny Brisbane, Australia (average daytime temperatures 28C summer/20C winter)

My wifes mothers Family are from the north of Finland, Rovaniemi but her fathers family are from the south, cannot remember the name at the moment, will ask her when she brings the children home from School.

Edit: the name of where her Dad lived was Nurmijarvia (she thinks)

Back to the car, if the gas pedal is showing correct voltages, then checking the mass air flow meter would be a good idea, I am surprised it is not throwing any codes for the MAF, would have thought it had a reference voltage of some sort. Certainly I am aware that the fuel pump in the diesels I think gave some problems, might be worth checking that, it sounds like the vehicle has gone into a "limp" mode, but if no codes are showing then this cannot be the case

Have you got access to a repair manual at all, KIA have a lot of information on the internet, just sadly not for the Diesel engine from what I can see.

I guess you have read this other thread where it talks about the problems with the vehicle with power loss

heh, one month ago we had -30 degrees, so this +2 is like summer after that...
I was born in Kuusamo witch is 190km away from Rovaniemi and my brother is working now there in Rovaniemi. Nurmijärvi is approx. 20km away from where I live now,Small world...have your Wive´s family ever visited there in Australia? Rovaniemi - Australia is quite good distance to keep with mother in law :-)..I´m envious about that.
And about the car.. Today I visited local Kia dealer and they checked trouble codes and cleared them away and now it runs like angel!!! Trouble codes were P1104(unknown), P0101(Maf sensor), P0340(Cranckshaft sensor) They said that broken MAF could cause also those other codes, I cleaned the maf sensor with my wive´s nail cleaner and it seems to work now properly. I also bought new one just to be sure.

Such a small world,

actually mother in law lives here, my wifes parents came out to australia when they were 18yo, met over here and married (had five children, my wife being 2nd child). They live about 10 minutes away from here.

My wifes parents have both been back to finland, I think the most recent was her father, about 6 years ago I think. He visited throughout his home area, loved going on the lakes and just experiencing life over there again for him was wonderful as he did not really want to leave when he was 18.

I am sure you would likely know his family, His family name is Lehtonen.

I am not surprised to here the problem was the MAF, seemed to be the only sensible option left. Just one thing to check, these MAF's usually have a self cleaning system where they heat up to maximum after the engine is turned off, it is worthwhile taking the air box off and watching what happens to the hotwire (i presume it is hotwire). You should see it glow/get really hot to burn off any gunk about five seconds after shutting the engine off.

Glad to here it was nothing else wrong with the engine.

Kind regards

Ashley
