I am considering buying a 2003 Sedona EX with 24,000 miles for $12,900. I don't know much about the minivan market, but would like some opinions. I'm sure ya'll are biased, but I would like to know the drawbacks that some have encountered or what I need to look for when buying a used Sedona. Yes I could use the search option, but cut me some slack since it's my first post and all. Thanks!
I have only ever owned a sedona regarding MPV's so cannot comment on other MPV's in comparison.
although I have had some problems with mine it has benn virtually trouble free for about 9 months now.
turning circle is rubbish, car vibrates alot, radio ariel is a waste of time, no trip computer (possibly because the fuel consumption is so bad, and anyone on a test drive will notice it) and unfortunately for you being in america in my opinion the petrol version is pointless, especially if you lived in the UK where fuel is so expensive.
it is nice and roomy inside although the placement of the DVD player is a bit dangerous, as things sometimes fly around the floor of the car, and there is no worse feeling in the world than putting the brakes on and hearing a baked beans can smack into the drivers seat.
I have previously owned a Toyota Tarago, now own a Carnival(Sedona).I find the petrol version of the Kia to be far more economical & comfortable than the Toyota.Around town we average 700klms per tank.We have just had a new motor fiited to our Kia due to a blown head gasket.Apart from that we are very happy with the Kia.The 4 kids love it.

Here's a list of most of my complaints about my '02 Sedona EX.
In addition to that list...
Gas mileage is terrible. If you buy, immediately get a K&N high-flow air filter. It helps but MPG is still less than most minivans.
Hatch requires a good slam to get closed but did on my '96 Voyager, too. Airbag warning light came on after going through a car wash (possibly coincidence). For in town driving, air conditioning isn't too great. Had to replace the visors (they were lighted and the flap that covers the mirror was busted).
Timing belt has to be replaced every 60K miles.
Finally, since the Sedona is fairly new, the motors and trannies are pretty much untested. Will they last 150K miles? 300K? 500K? Too soon to tell.

We have a 2002 Kia Sedona LX, bought new. We love it, only problems have been two broken cupholders and leaking rear brake cylinders, all fixed under warranty. Only complaint is bad gas mileage, but for the cost and what you get inside and the long warranty, its worth it.

I would only buy the diesel model since theres so many horrors stories about the V6 petrol engine version.
However since I don't think the US market have a diesel option then I'd give the Carnival a wide berth.
( Ain't the world a strange place !! , We're running out of hydrocarbons at an alarming rate....some parts of the world are running 60mpg diesels yet others think anything less than 3.0ltr cc is a weedy little car to do the supermarket trips in. One things' for certain....its those who have been running the economical cars that will feel the effects less in another 10 years )
read in an exited manner... "I dicked all over the citreon c8, from a roundabout with me starting behind him.." he tried to keep up with me but gave up through the S's

Bear in mind that the petrol engine in question (2.5 V6) ISN'T the engine in the Yankee model. That's a Mitsubishi 3.5 V6, same as the Sorento donk, not the Rover KV6 which has had all the problems. The big prob. in the U.S. seems to be that damn front-end "clunk", which I would guess has something to do with the extra weight of the bigger engine/trans unit.
Ours is the '05 model - 2.5 manual - and so far we're very happy with it. 22 mpg in town/29 mpg highway. The word is that these later models have had the liner/head-gasket prob. fixed (fingers crossed!) so I'd be leaning that way if possible.

That was my Brother's experience too. They went from a 2.0 litre manual Tarago to a 4.9 litre V8 Ford Fairlane (Carby, not Injection) & experienced similar economy! Much better performance in the Fairlane, too.
