I know this issue is hugely subjective to driving styles & journey types etc,
but can all the 2.9 diesel drivers reply to this post and confirm their typical mpg they are getting from their cars.

I've not done extensive checks on my 94000 mile CRDi model, but it seems to run out of juice at 400 miles. Its mainly urban usage and I'm only getting 26½mpg.

I know its a very heavy vehicle etc but I rather hoped it would be closer to 32-33mpg like the books suggest.

Mine has got signs the injectors haven't been happy at one point ( http://tinyurl.com/abs7q ) . Also when I accelerate heavily on occasion at night, theres plenty of smoke in the highlights of the cars behind.

If a stack of people revert to confirm they get consistant 33mpgs out of their Sedonas then it might force me to get mine checked out...

If it's anything like it is in the US, the MPG is based on an old method of calculation-- that is, compared to what we see today, the average speed is slower, wait times at stops are shorter, etc.

Hello Ebod,
As far as I am concerned, with my 2.9 diesel I get about 28-30mpg travelling 13 miles to work and 13 miles back, through the town and the resulting traffic, but on a long run, like Scotland, I regularly get 40-41 with a 75mph max speed.

Incidentally, I am not heavy on the right foot, I am more of a 'steady as you go' kind of guy.

Hope this helps.

It's very dependent on driving condtions, engine type, gearbox type and mileage.

We live 6 miles out of town, have a 2.9 diesel, manual and the wife generally drives who's got a lighter right foot than me.

We get about 33-35 to the gallon.

Previously my wife drove a Renault Laguna 2.0lt RT sport we got about 32-35 to the gallon out of that. so as the Kia weighs about 700kgs more with worse aerodynamics then the consumptions pretty fair.

Oh and when I drove the Renault it barely did 25MPG whereas the Kias barely any different.

Oh I meant to ask, ebod did you get the leaking injectors fixed with the upgrade kit?
I got all mine sorted recently and it made quite a difference to the noise levels, consumption and cold weather starting.

Hi,
My 55 plate Sedona suprised me. After the initial run in, I now get 33-35 on my journey to/from work, an 18 mile trip (36 both ways). It is a mix of A road and motorway, about 9 miles each. I regularly travel from Durham to Nottingham and Worksop, and on those journeys I get in the region of 45 mpg (best ever was 48!!), travelling at 65-75MPH. I normally get about 500-600 miles per tank depending on journey, brimming it full just before and after a long run. My car has 7300 miles on it, and is 5 months old, this is actually far better fuel consumption than I expected for such a heavy car, although I rarely drive it hard.

BTW. this is a Manual gearbox

Nope I never did anything about the injectors from my old posting last year.

Our Sedona ( manual gearbox ) does the school run plus 2 or 3 twenty mile round trips a week on motorway/dual carriageway stretches. It was serviced late last years and definately has a new air filter ( not fuel filter though )

We don't drive it hard, to be honest I don't like to rev it because it sounds very noisey/rough when it goes over 2500rpm.
In contrast my Xsara 2.0 HDI is a quiet flying machine, it just gets dropped in 5th at 40mph and shoots up to 80 in nano-seconds.

As I said in the O.P. there is a fair bit of 'headlight smoke' if I push it at night, but nothing smokey at startup etc. I has been a bad starter recently and needed a new battery. On tickover it is as quiet as any other modern diesel
It passed its MOT okay last November without any emissions hick-ups.

I'm very interested to know what exactly you did with yours, i.e. what mods and at what cost.

Looking at the posts so far, I'm concluding I should be getting at least 30+mpg out of this car, and maybe there is a fuel system fault. I'd love to be able to have a go at driving another 2.9 CDRi Sedona to get a better sense of whether mine is poorly.

How much is the Diesel over there, guys? Here it's $1-37.9 per litre, or $6-21 per Imperial Gallon. Someone else can work out the exchange rate! I THINK it's about $1-50 / 1 GBP?

Those are pretty impressive economy figures, especially as we only get the 2.5 petrol here. We get 22 mpg in town & 29/30 mpg highway out of our manual 2.5 V6. Mind you, ULP is $1-19.9 per litre so that evens things up.

Esses,
In the UK Diesel averages 95pence per litre, about 2.22 Australian dollars at current exchange rates. Petrol normally slightly less, about 91-93 pence per litre.

Hi Malcolm
I didn't realise fuel was so expensive over there,we complain about the cost of fuel here all the time.In Sydney I have seen diesel at 127.9 cents per litre during our so called discounting cycle.Cheers Len
