Default Rough start !

Hello all. I have a 2006 Kia sedona auto transmission van. It was pretty cold outside and I started the car but it started pretty rough. I heard a knocking noise and accelerator didn't respond. Check engine and ESC OFF lights came on. I shut it off started again knocking noise was gone but it was still running rough. After5 min I shut it off and restarted again and it was fine. The check engine light is still on.I got scared when I heard the knocking noise. I will take it to a mechanic tomorrow but please help me with your ideas. Thank you.

These vehicles suffer problems with the TPS. Kia has an updated part and an ECM upgrade to go with it. The accelerator symptoms you described sound similar to what I've seen so far. The knocking could be the timing chain tensioners. There is an updated part for those as well. If you continue to hear a knocking or rattling not related to the A/C compressor, you might want to take it in and leave overnight so they can hear the noise.

You were absolutely right. They have changed the TPS. How hard is it to change the tensioners? Thanks for your help.

The tensioners pay 6.4 hours under warranty. Requires the front cover removed to gain access to the tensioners. The TSB ENG 028 recommends both tensioners be replaced for valve tap type noise on one or more cylinders or for timing chain noise lasting longer than the initial 3 to 4 seconds start-up time. Hope this helps.
