Default Cam Belt Gone

Hi

I am pretty sure that the cam belt has just gone my my 2001 2.9 Sedona after it suddenly cut out and didn't start. The engine turned over on the starter motor but didn't seem to have any compression. As there were no unusual noises I am assuming that the valves haven't hit anything. Is it a "safe engine"? I was also wondering if it is easier to take out the engine and change the belt than try to do it in situ, which I believe is possible.

Thanks

James

If your cam belt had indeed snapped, then the engine would not turn over with out making any unusual noises, or even turn over at all. The engine is not a safe engine, engine damage would be most likely. It is possible to change the belt whilst in situ as Autodata 2008 says nothing about removing the engine, i believe this to be some of Kia's scare tactics to customers to justify the bill at the end. My Autodata says that the belt should be able to be changed in less than 3 hours.

Taking the engine out may cause you more problems in the long run, but it also depends if you have the facilities to do this.
