Default Carnival Electric Switch Questions

Hi Guys,

I've got two questions about switches on the dashboard and Automatic Transmission Lever on my 2.9Tdi.

First thing I have to tell you is the vehicle manual I got with the car is in Danish ............ not a whole lot of use because I'm a Brit. The car is LHD and I live in The Netherlands.

Okay that said here we go:-

1/. On the Transmission Lever there is a button which I assume is some kind of overdrive, whenever I press it a light illuminates on the Dash "HOLD".

The only thing that seems to happen is the revs go up a few hundred RPM on the rev counter, I don't see any use for this switch. Can anyone clarify it's purpose and when I use it?

2/. There is a switch on the panel marked ECO and PWR. When I press it a light illuminates on the Dashboard "PWR"

What exactly does this do? Can anyone clarify it's purpose and when I use it?

These may seem like stupid questions but as I wrote, my vehicle manual is in Danish.

Cheers Chris

Hi there Chris, the gearbox is a3 speed plus overdrive, 4speed really. What the black button on side does is drop it out of 4th(overdrive)and hold it in top (3rd) handy if you are towing or even car solo because , otherwise, every time you ease back on the accelerator it will try to go into overdrive! Hope this helps. The other switch is self explanitory, eco= economy, pow= power. All it does is alter the programme in the engine control unit(ecu).

Hi Chris
As Mio Cid says it holds the transmission in third which is useful for hills & overtaking but you also use it for third gear engine braking which saves on the brakes going downhill. Also when in hold mode it starts in 2nd to help in slippery conditions. Got no ECO/POWER on mine but I'd say its like sport mode and the transmission changes up at higher revs with power selected.
Under 50mph there is no engine braking at all it just freewheels and the revs go back to tickover(hence the g/shift button). Over 50mph the torque con verter locks up(feels like another gear) to give solid drive for better economy. This can be a pain about 55-60ish as too much throttle unlocks it,but at 70 its fine(approx 2250 revs). Hope all this helps.

Regards John.
