Default 2004 2.9 TDI timing belt/tensioner change!

Hi Guys

Me & my mate are using these busses for Taxing

And his Sedona 2.9ltr diesel is now due a Timing belt change! his is a 2004 54 plate which has now done 68k (50k in one year of taxing!!)

He just had a quote from our local KIA dealer for a belt & they told him he needs to replace the tensioners as well with the belt!!

They quoted him £350 for belt & tensioners kit & said they could supply & fit it all for £600!!!!!

Question is how important are the tensioners? or can he just changed the belt? does this need doing every 60k? (belt/tensioners)

Cheers

have a google at japarts or try your local motor factor for the price of the bits
as for whether to change the idlers or not if they say change them i would agree as even at £40 each times 3 this still works out a lot cheaper than a wrecked cylinder head plus since its a working vehicle the lost income and also cant you write off the cost of servicing against tax? also if you are planning on doing it yourself a few months ago car mechanics magazine did a belt change on a sedona but most of the article was about levering the engine over to allow access

I just checked on Autodata, the recommendation of 60k km is accurate, autodata say that if you fit a new belt fit a new tensioner spring, the idlers, I would only change if they're worn but that's a personal opinion.

Hi all

Yeah 93fxdl, that article in CM that you were on about was in the July 2007 issue. Apparently it says that Kia dealerships reckon a belt change is an engine out job but CM have found a way to do it without taking the engine out.

Unfortunately the Car Mechanics web site says it has sold out of that particular back issue. So if anyone has a copy of that issue going spare (I will pay for it and postage etc within reason) or can copy the article, I would be interested as I'm sure others on this forum would be.

Cheers.

Re above.

It's okay forget that for now. I have ordered a copy from a guy on EBay. I'll have a read when I get it and post back. Maybe look at the viability of putting a scan of it up here if I think it will be of any use and copyright rubbish doesn't get in the way.

Cheers

only just caught up on this post and am sorry to say the article dosent give a lot of info other than the way they get round pulling the motor is to put the car up on a lift and heave the engine over with a fookin great bar to get clearance using the aircon compressor to lever against!!!!

Unhappy timingbelt and tensioner

just got a quote off my local kia dealers (14 miles away) for £309.09 for just the belt or £500.40 if the tensioners and idlers want doing.
none of my local independents will touch it, theyre frightened to death of it i think!!!! its gotta be done, its nearly 6 years old.
