Default Power Surge/Fuel Starvation Problem

A little while back the '04 Sedona would loose power while under a load, like when you want to accelerate quickly when entering a freeway or when passing. The power lose was only momentary.
It would loose the power then surge back pretty hard. The last time the van started, and barely idled. it then stalled and fired back up, but this time there was a strong gas smell.(This was the 1st time this happened).
20 min. later it drove 1 1/2 miles and stalled and would not start back up. We pushed it back home and 5 min. later it started, but when I gave it gas it died.
It did set a code because the check engine light is on. How do i read it. Can I use a jumper wire to read the code.
Is it the fuel filter and do you know if it is in the tank or engine compartment?
Is there a fuel line I can safely disconnect to chech for fuel and/or pressure?
Thanks, Richard
