Your guide Iain is very helpful, but the last bit is the bit which does not add up to my problem, I thinks/suspect an issue with front left passenger and it has a bit of play now the drone/hum/whine does get louder the faster you go but it comes on as the car starts to turn to the left which goes against your above theory
Called by 2 different car parts suppliers today both quoted roughly the same about £75 for front left set they said it would probably be a full hub assembly for that money....I have no idea what they meant by that though

I know only too well the telltale "whine" of failing wheel bearings. I have a 2003 rio 4 dr with 114 K. I have had to change a total of 9 wheel bearings, [some front, some rear], since I bought it used with 40K. When my warrenty ran out, I decided to try the repair myself. I buy parts at auto zone for many reasons, but the best is that that will loan you tools FREE, and tell you how to do it. They sold me rear bearings, inner and outer, plus races and seals, and loaned me a tool to "press" the parts in neatly and securly. [You pay full retail for the used tool. When you return it, you get ALL your money back...or keep it if you like]. Just push the parts out from the other side with a chisel, screwdriver, whatever, and gently push the new in with the tool. The constant failure of the bearings drives me nuts, but now at least I can fix it myself at very reasonable cost.
