Default Same Old Carnival Problem

Can anyone with recent experience with the Carny head gasket/cylinder liner problem advise how much luck has been had on claiming the replacement engine through warranty? What proportion has Kia been willing to pay?

I've got an July 03 (build date) Carnival that came out of warranty 3 months ago with 46,000km and has just been diagnosed as needing the replacement short engine. I would like to get a feel for what my out of pocket cost is going to be based on the experiance of others.

The Kia service dealer has passed the claim onto Kia Australia who in turn has sent it on to Korea for assessment. I am now waiting the 2 days to 4 weeks for a response.....

Does anyone know if the demise of Rover had an effect on the contribution Kia makes? I understand that the owners of earlier models were looked after reasonably well and I am concerned that the level of 'Good Will' may now have reduced with nowhere for Kia to pass the buck onto.

Any comments are appreciated.

G'day
Sorry to hear about your problem. We had the same problem last year & Kia fortunately covered ours even though we weren't the original owners.Ours was 3 yrs out of warranty & had 106,000 klm's on the clock. We had to provide the full service history which fortunately had been up to date.It took them 8 weeks to fix it.They no longer provide a courtesy car as they used to.Hopefully they will cover you as the public has shown them goodwill with there record sales over the last couple of years & goodwill is supposed to be a two way street.Good luck, let us know how you get on.Cheers Len

You should be fine I would think, especially if it is first time around. It is clearly a manufacturers fault and there are statutory warranties in place that indicate that a vehicle needs to be made good if it was a fault from the factory (which of course this is, it has nothing to do with the way you have looked after the vehicle or maintained it). Just because the fault has taken this period of time to manifest is irrelevant.

Everything should be paid for (and I mean everything). It is not your fault that they built a crappy engine with a fault in it from the factory.

Just my 2c worth.

Thanks for your feedback

Kia have now come back with an offer of 'Good Will' -- only took 10days.....not too bad I guess. They have offered to pay 50% of the costs leaving us with a $4K-$5K bill and a new engine that wont have a warranty and could go the same way..... Doesn't seem quite right given the age and service history of our vehicle. Not sure what can be done about it though. If I fight them for more $$$ they may just say that their 'Good Will' is no longer offered and I will be without a vehicle for another 10days or possibly more.

I have tried phoning the Kia customer care number and sending them emails, and get no assistance from the Kia Employee who states "that a limited number of vehicles have been affected and that the Customer Service People cannot talk to the Warranty People within Kia to sort anything out"....How's that for customer service/assistance?!

What garbage, this problem is well documented as coming from the factory, go back to them and insist this is a problem with the cylinder liners not being to specification and working there way into the block.

I see you are in Brisbane. If you do end up going down the path of repair, flick off KIA at that price you can get a reliable mechanic who has had considerable good outcomes in repairing the carnival engine. He is on the north side. Cannot remember his name at the moment. Will see if i can find it.

But seriously this is not good enough when they made a faulty product. This has nothing to do with wear and tear, this is simply a bad design from the factory.

I would be getting back to Kia as it does not cost $8 to $10 thousand to repair this problem. The average cost would be around the 5 to 6 thousand,so how do they work out that 4 to 5 thou is 50% of the cost of repair.
