Returning from a highway trip this weekend I noted that during the trip the rotors on the Sedona had warped, giving a pulsation when braking. At only 4k miles thats a little bit of a disappointment.
Anybody else had any similar issues? Going to request that Kia replace the rotors under warranty. Resurfacing them will just thin them and it will happen again. We'll see how that goes.
I've owned a lot of Japanese cars and I have found that warping rotors is an issue on them, seems like it may be the same way for Korean cars.
I had a similar problem with my 2012 Chrysler Town & Country. I think that the stock front brakes are too small on most vans to deal with the weight, especially if your usual driving involves a lot of hills and hard braking. See what they say about the warranty issue. Obviously 4k miles isn't wear and tear. I've got about the same mileage on mine but haven't noticed any issues yet.
It's seldom happen for a 4k miles vehicle unless the pads had been modified into ceramics one. Faulty ABS will contribute but it's rarely happens. Got 10k on ODO but nothing notice same issue. I hope things will resolve accordingly..
Felt compelled to sign up when I read this thread. Same issue on ours with about 5500KM so roughly the same mileage. Only thing is occasionally the front end knocks slightly under hard braking.
Many thanks to the OP and I eagerly await the dealership response.
Hi SW,
Yes, it is possible to warp rotors real fast.
A Nissan dealership has storage lot near my home. I've seen their drivers, rev-up and brake hard the new cars before prospect new-buyers get a chance to test drive them.
A new car has new pads; there is break in process to be follow, failure to do so may lead to uneven pad bed-in.
Insist the dealer to repair the issue. Chances are, turning the rotors wont really hurt at 4K miles.
Good luck. MV
Referring in the Owner's Manual, In normal maintenance schedule that is, 7,500 miles. It's not even listed to inspect the disc/pads and calipers not until it reached 15,000 miles of use. @mvkma - If you have an idea to share if you know the process of breakin-in the rotors? Thanks In Advance..
My Sedona SX is currently sitting just under 26k miles, and I noticed a warped rotor around 15k miles. The only time I ever feel it is if I have been doing a lot of braking, otherwise it still brakes smooth.
I only noticed it after my first hard brake (and I mean car stopped short in front of me and I had the oedal to the floor). Now during normal braking its fine, but if its just a hint of hard, it vibrates. I am at 14.6k miles.
Which stinks because I am out of the 12000 mile range for service items. However, my van has been in the shop more this past month and a half than out of it (refer to my thread).
Just an update, haven't had them looked at but after a 10 hour round trip driving in the mountains, brake feel from the front is quite poor. Grinding, lack of stopping power, and pulsations in the pedal. Got the message that service is needed in 840 miles, will bring it up with them then. Van has about 6700 miles on it.
SWSedona, You should see the service department right away. If delay, your van will face more serious brake issues in that case. Grinding and lack of stopping power, sounds like serious to me. They should replace the rotors and pads if they found out any one of those failed. It's under warranty, so just relax.
This is an old thread but I wanted to reply. I have a 2002 Sedona. The rotors have warped every time I've replaced them or turned them. It's simple the van is too heavy and the rotors are too small !!! Hard braking does it faster, but it will happen.
Had the same issues with our Entourage.
Be prepared to replace the sway bar links next. When you start hearing the "clunks" in both the front & rear ......................... they are the culprit.
Changed them three times so far on our van with 125k miles.
what was the issue with the brakes? My rear pads are wearing prematurely and calipers are not available for 2015 sedona. I am wondering if it is an abs issue because the rotors will collapse if I bleed them but this would be the third set of pads for the rear.
Something's not right there. I've got almost 60,000 miles and I'm still on the original pads. I do sometimes get a little vibration after heavy braking, but it usually goes away when the rotors cool (comes back when they're hot). Last time I was at the dealer, they said the front pads are nearing end-of-life, but the rear pads should hold out until about 75-80,000 miles.
The people who are experiencing shudder may just need to re-bed their brakes. The Sedona has decent enough brake capacity (320mm front rotor vs. 300mm in the sienna and 320mm in the odyssey for example), so rotor warpage is not the issue. Most of the shuddering people experience is because of irregular use and not getting the system up to a proper heat cycle, cause uneven brake deposits.
