Question Is there a way ..........?????

Is there a way to retrieve a check engine light code manually.......you remember the old days...holding random buttons, turning the key to on, counting the blinking lights ? Believe it or not, I have a new little Suzuki and you can still figure out the codes manually since most of us don't own scan tools and ROM chips. How bout on the big Sedona, can we get check engine code access without a $50.00 bill ???
