I have a 2006 Sedona LX that I really want to like but am having trouble with the transmission going into neutral when accelerating to merge into traffic. The car only has about 1000 miles on it. I brought it to the dealer to look at but since it did not generate any "trouble codes", and we could not replicate it, the dealer's service department can't pinpoint the problem. This has occurred on two separate occasions now.
I have read of two other people having similar problems with the 2006 where you start to accelerate and the engine revs to very high RPM's because the transmission is all of a sudden in neutral! This creates a very dangerous situation when you are trying to merge. Imagine being in your brand new minivan with your kids in the back seat and traffic is starting to bear down on you because you've lost power just when you need it!
If anyone else has had similar problems, I would greatly appreciate to hear your experience and whether or not your problem was fixed.
Otherwise, I like most everything else about it. So it is possible that I just got a lemon, but if I hear others are experiencing the same problem, I feel obligated to file a complaint with the NHTSA. After all, this is being marketed as "the safest minivan ever...".
I have the same problems and today i just take my carni to Kia service centre and try to tell they the problems same as your Imagine but all they say this is normal with the Tiptronic automatic
Andy
Have them put it in writing and send a copy off to the NHTSA see what their opinion is of an authorized factory representitive saying that losing power due to transmissions spontaniously going into neutral is normal.
I doubt that they (NHTSA) will agree. Force the tech or service writer to experience the problem and make sure that the complaint is worded correctly on the w/o. Then make sure that they have their remedy noted on the w/o.
Hopefully, this is a lease vehicle. You don't own it ..their preferred lender does. Let them come and get the thing. Go out and buy another vehicle before they trash your credit for defaulting on the lease. Hopefully your consumer credit has a low balance.
my 2005 venture did that to 6000kms. I noticed it did that when ever i kept flooring it. I took it in and they said its normal because it has to wear in then it would be fine. When you buy a new car you really shouldn't go over 3000rpm to its warn in.
Raven1210, I'm glad to hear that maybe this is a common break-in problem with some automatic transmissions. If anyone is following this post, I'm happy to report that I am no longer experiencing this problem with our transmission. It had only slipped those two times (within about a week of each other). At that time, the van only had a few thousand miles on it and we were still taking it pretty easy with the engine. Still, I am surprised that it had slipped. When it had occured, the engine was not floored, just given enough to kick it down so that we could merge into traffic on a short on-ramp. We are now closing in on 6000 miles (we don't drive it very far), and are happy with the van again. Even though the dealer didn't look too hard into our problem initially, they did come through and signed a letter for us that if it slipped again, we could call them and they would come have KIA tow it to their dealership and provide a free loaner car to us until they figured out the problem. That seemed pretty fair. I recently tried to re-create the slip again but couln't get it to happen again. I still believe that the 2006+ Sedona is a tremendous value and overall a pretty good minivan. I'm hoping that it will continue to be reliable from here out.
Auto box jumpy followed by engine check light on dask, when check light illuminated throttle was either full or idle auto box able to move vehicle with manual mode but really undriveable , total mileage 600 miles. Kia technicians found fault as TMU (transmission management unit ) vehicle of road for past three weeks no spares world wide part not even listed in Kia manuals, advised spare may have to be taken from vehicle in delivery compound in Germany !! (second hand unit ??)
So here we wait
Been down that road before. Waited a month for a fuel pump last year. Pump was on a worldwide backorder so they told me. It really is sorry supply chain management. JMHO
AT LAST BACK ON ROAD !!!! Any one managed to recover out off pocket costs from Kia Uk ???
For information unit is called TCU (transmission control unit) requires a large area of dashboard to be removed to gain access on drivers side.

We are addressing the supply chain management system with additional software upgrades, new computer systems, and trained parts people. The procedures are being performed by a third party company that specializes in this sort of thing in the auto industry with great resolutions. We are already seeing the benefits of this huge investment in money and persons. The end result will be quicker and more accurate distribution of parts from the point of order at the dealer to the finale delivery of party. Turn around times will be greatly improved in many cases to the world wide network. Some markets are so distant and have far fewer sales to support a parts distribution center so Kia is assigning additional parts at the local level for those markets. Like anything this massive of a rollout, benefits will be seen over a period of time unfortunately and not all at once in our world wide network.
Well KIA UK came up trumps , after a letter and phone call all sorted, to mine and KIA's satisfaction, still not sure why no spares available for transmission control unit (TCU)available in UK or Europe and donor vehicle had to be located in Germany KIA unable to answer that. After all Europe is a large market.
No problems with vehicle since TCU replaced drives great again and pulls like a horse when trailer attached !
Think KIA could improve rear seat attachment mechanism not that easy to install/remove seats any one else have problems or even a quick guide
