G'day Jserrent
The new 3.8 does have a timing chain instead of a belt, which i think will be much better in the long run as you won't have to fork out a fortune every 100k.Cheers Len

OMG! Sanity at last. A CHAIN! One reason I like my Patrol is it's simplicity: OHV, 2 valves per cyl., Timing Chain, Carburettor, a real Distributor etc etc. I can WORK on the thing! But I still love our Carni. too.

The cam chain tensioners are the problem now. Ours were replaced at under 10k miles. Still has a cam chain rattle under certain conditions.

Yes sadley chains can be just as prone to troubles as timing belts. Really no reason in this day and age for it but it happens. The NEW Hyundai 3.8 and 3.3V6's in both Hyundai's and KIA line have chains. In fact If and when you do have to service them. Weather due to advanced age or guide/tensioner problems. Getting all warm and fuzzy over a chain versous a belt just yet might be a little soon. Do not think you are getting off cheaper then a said to be expensive T/B job. Like many of you say is too much for your blood. As Those engs have not one but THREE chains, and thier guide/tensioner counter parts. One for left bank, one for right bank, and one for the oil pump. So more times the parts as a single belt system to mess up and go bad.

Granted but I'd still rather trust a chain over a belt anyday. Too many horror stories & personal experiences with belts - especially Mitsubishi ones. My '89 Toyota Hiace had a Double-Row chain that wasn't even rattling when the 1st motor wore out at 428 000 km. My old '76 Mini had the usual rattly Mini timing-chain. When I had the motor re-built we found the real reason - the lower gear-wheel (on the crankshaft) had SPLIT & was actually in 2 halves. It was only the chain on the teeth holding it on. And that little 998 had been maxed out to 160 kmh in top at 6000rpm many times by then!
