Diesel Smell in car

Hi All

I'm a newbie and would like some advice if possible.
I have a 2004 Carens with 32k miles on the clock.
It is an excellent car in every way and very reliable, but in the last week I have noticed a strong smell of diesel inside the cabin when I start her up. Also occasionally there is an odour outside too.

Is this a common issue? Is it likely to be serious and will it cost a lot to repair?

I believe you capped the fuel tank, did not you?
If not this

... how does it start?
Diesel has very strong odor, which stays for long, looong time.

Give more details - any other time you smell it? Do you see fuel dripping somewhere? How about fuel lines? Any fuel sings under the hood?

It always starts first time with no trouble. There are no signs in the engine bay or under the car of a leak but there is a smell of diesel near the front end sometimes.
