Default 2005 Carens 2ltr diesel gear box

When kia joined up with hyundi they must have been given a job lot of gear boxes left over from the Trajet.
My diesel 05 carens has done 100,000 miles and in the time it has had a gear box rebuild at 63000 a full replacement at 68,000 and only last week another rebuild at 99,000
There is a thin brass cog that goes between the gears and it is these that go they just disintegrate and without any warning.
My dealer has been very quick to get the car back on the road and even though it was out of warranty last week he managed to get Kia to pay for nearly the full rebuild, even though its used a a taxi.
Fuel consumption is poor at an average 34 MPG and it sounds like a cement mixer when its in forth at 30MPH but quiets down as soon as you get it up to 40 in 5th

Hi & welcome to the forum. 1st job is to fill out the rest of your profile please, year & model & location helps everyone as this is very much a worldwide forum.

My local dealer warned me against buying the Mk2 Carens for the same reason, it's a well known fact that the gearboxes are a weak point!

I was interested to hear your average of 34mpg, my Mk3 Carens wont get near 30, in fact the last brim to brim was just over 28mpg, this was a weekend shift including both day & night driving.

All I can say is the Mk3 is way better than the Mk2 in every respect except consumption & I think this is down to modern technology & the fitment of the dpf system, wish I could throw mine away!

I've now got a Mk2 as a private car, got appx 39mpg last night on a run back from Blackpool to Brighton at a steady 75mph, I'd stick with your 40+ if I was you!

I just hope the gearbox doesn't misbehave on my Mk2 but if it does I am well aware they are a weak point & take this chance to have the car I want.

Hi fellow Carens lovers!
Just want to compare notes;
My EX A/T (2008 Philippine 4-speed model) shifts gears at ff speeds per speedometer and LCD readout:
01-09, 1st Gear;
10-29, 2nd Gear;
30-69, 3rd Gear;
70- up, 4th Gear!!!
With my other car with M/T (5-speed), I usually shift at speeds lower than the above to conserve fuel since I was led to believe that low rpm meant low Fuel Consumption.
I usually shift to 4th at 40km/hr and 5th at 60km/hr.

Questions:
a) Don't you think 3rd gear speeds are too high?
b) Can we ask the Carens Service technicians to adjust the "Shift Gear system" to lower the 4th Gear shifting speed???

Exactly the reason I didn't buy an auto! I've said it before, fit the 2.0 diesel with a 5 speed box & I'll buy one!

Don't think the settings are electronic therefore adjustable, let me know if you do though!

PS: My golden rule is to change up below 2,000 rpm at every opportunity, that's the best way forward with a manual I feel.
