Default Locking Gas (Fuel) Cap

OK, with the spiraling fuel prices here in the U.S. it's time for the LOW LIFE to come out of their holes and start stealing gas (fuel) from unsuspecting owners. It hasn't happen to me or anyone in my neighborhood but I do know of others. The locking door on the Rondo won't help much. I went to the KIA dealer and they have no locking gas cap. I also went to the largest auto store (Auto Zone) and they have no listing for a locking cap for a Rondo. "Rondo" IS in the listing of vehicle, but no listing for a locking cap. Anybody know of one that will fit?

This might be a little off-topic, but do you honestly believe this will become a problem? people stealing gas? Gas prices in Europe have been much higher for a long time now, and i don't believe anyone is locking his gas tank over there.

Sagi,

You didn't put your location except for the U.S.A. on your profile so I can't say if your anywhere around a large city, but yes I think it will become a problem. I already know of two incidents of gas stealing, not around my way but up in Virginia and if your old enough to remember when gas caused lines at the filling stations, loads of people all over the U.S. were having it done to them. Europe has had high prices for a long time, so maybe they're used to it. Americans aren't.

It's already a huge problem in my region. People are not only ripping off gas from other people but bandits are stealing biodiesel from local storage.

Nothing is sacred. I was almost the victim of a catalytic converter theft at the grocery store. Drug addicts are stealing so many catalytic converters for the precious metals that local muffler shops are offering to weld the bolts for free. I didn't mean to get off topic.

Problem solved. I emailed my friend in England and he found one on the U.K. eBay for all sorts or KIA's. It was going for 12.99 British Sterling so not too bad. At least I'll have piece of mind leaving the wife's car out when we go shopping or wherever we go plus it sits out all day and night at home.

Where do you install the gas lock? I have never heard of that before. Post a pic when you get it.

It's a gas CAP lock. The cap automatically locks when you turn it like the regular cap after getting gas. The key (that comes with the cap) fits in the middle of the cap and you have to turn it clock-wise to unlock it before turning the cap counter-clock wise to take it off. Without the key, the cap would just turn and turn and never come off. Stops anyone from accessing the filler tube and draining the gas.

I hate to point this out, but I read somewhere that, in the U.K., thieves are actually cutting fuel lines to steal gas. A locking gas cap wouldn't help much in that scenario.

No problem pointing that out. I've heard of thieves actually punching holes in the bottom of the gas tank and having cans underneath to catch the spilt gas, but I'm just trying to stop rookie low lifes that are looking for an easy mark.

Lets face it, even the toughest steering wheel lock don't work if the thief cuts the steering wheel.

Default locking gas caps

The Stant corporation offers locking gas caps for almost any automotive application.

Stant Manufacturing: Oil filler, Radiator & Gas Caps and Automotive Thermostats

The one for Rondos is 10512.

Only US stores I've found them reliably is Advance Auto Parts stores. I'm told Pep Boys carries them but I haven't found any around Louisville yet.

Spare keys are available at places that use Axxess key machine systems like major builder supplies and WalMart. The Axxess key blank for either of mine is #78.

Hereabouts the big rage now is poking a hole in the bottom of fuel tanks, especially SUVs and pickups with easy access underneath. Dozens of thefts a week that way. No need to syphon or pump then. Catalytic converters still disappear in waves with the favored removal method being cordless angle grinders or reciprocal saws.

Gotta remember folks, when it comes to real property security: Locks are for honest people and fences are for good neighbors. For everyone else there are Rottweilers and Smith & Wesson. (Except you folks in UK, Canada and Australia no longer have the last option.)
