Default My new Rondo- My opinion

Hi,

I bought a Rondo LX V6 7 seater(Almond Beige with Beige interior )on Dec 31st Here is Seattle. I think I got reasonable good deal. I bought it because I need a occasional 6 seater.

I traded in my 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander with 36k and bought this. Since I have been driving this 2003 Outlander for last 4+ years, I do compare with that.

And remember these are my observations, and my opinion based on my experience. I am not criticizing or praising, just mentioning the observations and comparisons. I would welcome, your opinions, ideas, suggestions, tips, tricks etc....

Also, I may keep adding content to this post as I remember things I want to add.

It has following equipment.

LX V6 2.7L with Popular equipment Package
Convenience Package( Keyless, Alarm, Cruise Control).
Third Row 50/50 Split Folding Seat
Rear Upper Spoiler
Cross Bars
Carpeted Floormats
Rear Bumper Protector

Bought Original KIA Splash guards set(front and rear) for $35 incl shipping online. Did not get a chance to mount those. I hope these will reduce dirt, road grim splashing over front doors, as well add to some looks.

Looks:

Outside:
I liked the looks overall, but not really excited about it.

I liked the side profile, and rear profile is also look reasonably good. But I do not get why door guards are mounted so low. Frankly they look fugly. They should have been installed at proper height and side profile looked much better, helps slab sided look.

Now the front, I do not know what they were thinking when they put that dinky front grill on this size vehicle. It does not match the vehicle at all. They designed very good grill for Optima, and I am not sure why they put this ugly thing on this one. They should better change it as soon as possible.

Inside:

This is where I really liked. All interior looks very good, and feels richer than vehicle price suggests. All colors look pleasant, controls feel smooth, and accessibility of all controls including Audio, AC, Power Mirrors etc is very good.

But seats are getting dirty very easy(much easier than my Outlander, no spot in 4+ years even without covers in the any seat), and I also observed water marks on the seats as others mentioned. But in Seattle it is unavoidable.

Cruise control, somehow I felt side stacked column one is more comfortable to operate than this one. I used to have similar one in my previous accord, but my Outlander is side stack, and I felt it is more comfortable than this one.

Somehow, the AC/Heater Fan speed control is little different than I used to. To turn off the Fan completely we need to rotate direction control knob to off position. But almost all cars I used so far turn off fan when I rotate the fan knob completely to the left( counter clockwise).

And howcome rear wiper does not have intermitten setting? I thought by default all rear wipers are like that. But not a big thing, I usuall does not leave it on anyways.

Also, it seems front wipers are not speed sensitive ! My 2000 Honda Accord, as well as 2003 Mitsu Outlander both have speed sensitive wipers, so in Variable intermitten setting, wiper strokes increase as we go faster, and slows down considerably when we come to stop. And by the way this is a expensive vehicle than those two.(even after all these discounts)

Gear shifter position also little different than I used to, but that needs just getting used to. But one odd thing is when instrument lights are on, shifter drive modes light up on the shifter plate, but there is no indicator on shifter plate that show/glow which is mode is selected( ofcourse we can see in the dash).

View from inside is very good, I can see everything clearly.
Seating is reasonably good, but somehow I did not feel as good as my outlander(I may get used to it). You may say I got used to outlander, but the fact is when I traded in my 2000 Honda Accord and bought Outlander, I felt very comfortable with outlander even when I took first test drive.(Rather I felt at home with driving position).

One thing I really liked is how I can turn on interior lights by rotating the Instrument Panel brightness control. This is really useful when we need to look at the kids in the back. Also I liked the light with the luggage area, though not a must, it is useful.

And I do not know why there needs to be a light in the ash tray!!? May be a smoker can answer that? May be they just want make sure smoker do not put the burning cigar some other place!!?

I felt it is very easy to lift up the 3rd seats. But I am not sure how long that strap provided for lifting the third seat lasts, esp it goes under cargo every time we load something when seats are folded.

Parking brake kind of weird for me as I am not used foot brake like this. Also, I felt it is not holding with enough force despite I press it hard. So, putting in the drive mode, it just keeps moving. Generally I pull the parking brake hard, so even if we put the vehicle in drive, vehicle would not move without releasing the parking brake(unless you stomp on throttle). This way we would not forget that parking brake has been applied.
But this is not a big issue at all. It is only a parking aid.

Stereo/Radio: Radio controls are laid out very well, big and easy to operate.
Even with 4 speakers Stereo sounded good with a CD, but not so good for FM Radio. Overall Base is overpowering for my taste, so I dialed down the base -3 and Mid -5, and increased the Tone to +8 and that helped.
But what is beyond my understanding is why there is no Aux jack, or why it does not play MP3s. Now-a-days even very cheap entry level cars head units with these features, how come this one does not have!!? It is a bummer. I felt overall it reasonably good, but compared to old Mitsu head unit sound quality is not that great( but layout and usability is good).

Now the Engine and transmission:
I felt 2.7L V6 is very smooth and quite, even in cold start.
Transmission upshifts are smooth(but noticeable to me), and manual shifting is good.
I observed that it shifts to 5th gear near 38 - 40MPH with light throttle, so most local driving may be in 4th gear(which is not bad). I have not completed even my first tank, so I do not know the mileage. Frankly I am expecting something like 18MPG local.

Acceleration is pretty good, but I did not use full throttle or went above 4k RPM as engine is not broken-in yet.

Brakes: Brakes are good, pedal feel is okay. (I think I was spoiled by my Outie).

Steering: Steering is okay, lighter(which I like), little numb when compared to my two previous vehicle, and on-centre is little slower than I used to.

In turning there is moderate body lean, but I think it is well controlled.

Suggested impovements:
Engine/Transmission: with V6 everyone expect much more power, atleast 200HP, and it is easily doable( even 2008 Honda Accord 2.4L I-4 engine makes 190HP) and there is Chrysler 2.7l V6 which makes 200HP.

So, make it 200HP, 190lb-ft torque, both are attainable with some minor changes.(This would improve acceleration figures too).( Minor+)

If required make gearing changes to transmission and improve fuel economy.(along with improved engine).(Minor)

Body: Make it more aerodynamic(reduce Cd) and adjust the gearing accordingly(Read more fuel efficient, less wind noise).(Major).

Change that ugly front grill(Grill shape as well as size). Trivial.
Move the Door guards, where they belong( belt line). Not at the bottom of the door.(Trivial)

If possible offer sliding doors as option.(Minor++)

offer Navigation as an option.(should be trivial as it has Radio has double din setup)(Trivial).

Extend the body after back seat by 3" (keep the same wheel base and everything same). This would be really beneficial as currently 3rd row passenger seat is uncomfortably closer to rear hatch glass, and also adds much required space behind 3rd row seats.(atleast a stroller must fit).( This may fall under Minor++ or Major--). As adding 3" should not change dynamics much(as it is after the rear axles) and should not add any considerable weight.

Also, use much more high strength steel in passenger compartment and reduce some weight( may be something like 100lb).Major.

Also, it would be nice to have hatch glass open separate so we do not need to open whole door to put couple of grocery bags(Minor).

Most important thing, improve fuel economy more( as 2008 Mazda5 is substantially improved), and this would more visible once Rondo uses 2008 EPA standard.

Problems observed: So far I observed car is pulling to right(with or without Traction control), I know it is not road banking, as even in the left most lane where banking is to the left it pulls right, but intensity vary based on high much banking is there on the road. Not called the dealer yet. I will update once I give it for checkup.

I will upload photos shortly, as I have not taken any photos yet. It's been very cold, rainy, dark, so I am waiting for some sunlight.

Welcome to the forums. Thanks for your feedback. In regards to the issue above, I have been fighting with the dealer and now Kia Canada to get my Rondo fix for pulling to the right. So far no solution and please document what you find and what solution you get to correct the problem. I have documented my issues in "Warranty Claims" and "ESC - pulls to the right". Hope you have better luck that I have! I have had the Rondo for over two months and 6,000kms and still have not got this resolved!

Dmac93 also complained about this. Intriguing that all of us that have complained about pulling to the right have been V6 owners - myself, DMAC93, and now you (chitti1)!

I can tell you that by law, the parking brake is required to hold the vehicle in all forward and reverse gears when fully applied. Other than lurching, it should remain stationary. I know when I got mine, I was not pushing down far enough as I was afraid I was pushing too hard. My last car had the same style of parking brake but you really had to push with a lot of might. You might have your dealer check that out, too, since you are pushing down all the way and the vehicle is still moving. It may be just a simple adjustment.

Same here, unless the park brake holds the car, at idle, it will not pass the annual inspection. We have to have our vehicle inspected each year here in Nova Scotia.

chitti1 - congratulations on your purchase, that was quite a early trade with only 36,000 miles on it. That is a lot to absorbe at one go, but I'll give you my opinion to:

Exterior:

splash guards - standard on all Canadian models but they could do with being a bit larger
Looks - I like it overall, but more interested in function than this. About the only vehicle that I've owned that got me really excited on looks was a 1972 Citroen GS
side chrome bars - I agree would make more sense at the middle, just decoration doesn't serve any purpose. You can get a rubber strip on the Carens in the UK, but none seems to be available on this side of the pond. They should use something like on the Rio
front grille - never give it much thought, seems okay to me

Interior:

interior controls - agree with you
seats - did find a stain on the side bolster on mine that's still there, but have not attempted to remove it yet
cruise control - like these steering wheel controls very much, has side stalks on my other vehicle. Also appreciate it lights up on the dash telling you whats happening
ac/heater fan - my other vehicle shut off when you put it to full left as it was a slide control, but have no problem with this set up and those controls work so smooth
rear wipers - intermittent would be nice, but so far I haven't had to leave them on constantly
front wipers - don't find it a problem that they are not speed sensitive, the intermittent works great. An Accord and Outlander are a lot more expensive than the Rondo.
Gear shifter position - excellent location, also like the offset gate positions for the different selections (wasn't sure at first as my other vehicle was straight forward and back), but now I really appreciate this feature. Also the manual shifter is fantastic and a bonus in bad winter conditions.
View - like the large windows and the terrific visibility and don't find the rear corner blind spot has been the problem I thought it might have been. Hate those slots they call windows that a lot of cars have particular vehicles from Chrysler.
seating - very good, have to play around with the seat height and back rake, but found a good position, also the height in relation to getting out of it - you are not lifting your self up (my other vehicle seems like I'm sitting on the floor compared to this one). Great vehicle particular for people with various problems who have trouble getting into lower vehicles and can't climb into the higher SUV's. It's more like getting in and out of chair.
interior lights - too good overhead lights, but they removed the side luggage light in the 2008 models for some dumb reason and major source of irritation with me.
ash tray light - no ash tray at the front of the 2008 models, but still one at the back of the console for the rear passengers. I don't smoke but handy for coins.
parking brake - it is unusual but works fine (my last vehicle was a foot operating brake). I took your note and tested mine and it holds the vehicle in drive. By using a foot brake instead of a hand brake, it gives you more room in the centre console area.
Stereo - excellent, very easy to use controls, large buttons and simple to figure out without having to use to manual much (the mp3 player I bought for my previous vehicle was way to complex and you had to read the manual to do the most simple thing). The AUX jack has been added into the lower console for 2008 models but would like to see a USB input like they put in their Spectra and Rio models which are lower priced vehicles. Good sound through the six speakers in my model.

Engine and transmission:

2.4L is also smooth and quiet and starts fine (-22C the lowest test so far)
transmission - shifts are smooth (hardle notice it) and as I mentioned the manual shifting is great.
acceleration - fantastic for a four, when it kicks down for passing its very smooth and powerful. Outperforms my previous vehicle that had a 2.8L V6
brakes - very good, sensative in comparison to my previous vehicle.
steering - no problems, like how it handles

Suggested Improvements:

- move the lower chrome side guards
- bring back the cargo area side light
- bring back the glove box light
- intermittent wipers for the rear
- rear glass hatch would be nice (liked that feature on the Matrix)
- improve fuel economy by offering a diesel (so far my MPG has ranged from 26 - 34 to the imperial gallon) - always want improve fuel economy no matter what vehicle we drive
- offer sunroof on lower models
- trip computer should be standard
- rear bumper guard should be standard (have it installed on my vehicle)
- offer the options that are available in other parts of the world for the Carens

Problems:

- one heated rear window strand did not work, now repaired. Dealer has been excellent so far. (just turned 3500 km)

absolutely no problem with my vehicle pulling to the right. Can let go of the steering wheel at 80kmph and tracks straight (within reason)

this is like writing a novel (had to do it in shifts), but now you've had my two cents worth.

Thanks for providing detailed opinion. This gives good perspective on how others feel about Rondo.

I agree with you, it is very good car, but even this one can be improved with few minor changes you and I mentioned.

I traded-in my Outlander because I need a six+ seater soon. I am in between this and Mazda5, but when I started evaluating both Rondo and Mazda5, 2008 Mazda5 specs were not finalized. If we see the 2008 Mazda5 somehow mileage figure has gone-up with 2008 Model, I am guessing they tuned engine, and added 5 speed Auto to attain 21/27 MPG for 2008 revised EPA rating.( if it was 2007, it would have been something like 19/24 city/highway). If I saw those specs, I would have been in dilemma(Rondo V6 is 18/25).

BTW, you commented Outlander and Accord are expensive vehicles, nope. I paid $1500 less than this for outlander, and $1000 less than this for Accord, and both are brand new.Of course those did not have 6-airbags or V6 engine.

But never the less I like my Rondo, only fact is I did not get the color I want( Metallic Gray with Beige interior), instead I got Almond Beige/Beige as it was only one with 7 seat with V6 available in nearby dealer. I think Rondo looks sharp in Metallic Gray .

Thanks

Lightbulb Mazda 5 vs. Rondo

Yea, I was looking into +6 seaters when my mini van needed more on repair then it was worth.

My neighbor down the street got a Mazda 5 and began to look into one. I actually prefer the looks and the handling of the Mazda 5. But enjoy the power of the Rondo. In Canada, for the same price I get leather, a sun roof and a 5 year bumper to bumper. From what I've been seeing both the 5 and the Rondo is going to about the same "real world" mileage.

Enjoy your new ride.

Default 2008 Rondo EPA Mileage figures??

I was checking EPA site for 2008 model Mileage figures, I found it to be weird as both 4 cyl and V6 has same Highway mileage.

Kia Rondo 4 cyl, 2.4 L, Automatic 4-spd, Regular

19 city 26hwy

Kia Rondo 6 cyl, 2.7 L, Automatic 5-spd, Regular

18 city 26 hwy

So, did KIA changed some gearing ratios for V6 5 speed for 2008? or they just figured once we go around 70+, they both give same highway mileage?
