Default Particulate Filter Warning Light

Hi all,

Last night I had a warning light flashing, it was the word "check" underneath a picture that I can't really describe but this is also displayed when you 1st turn the ignition on before cranking the starter (I'll try to find a pic later when I have more time) then after a while the pic stayed on but stopped flashing.

Phoned the dealer this morning & took the car straight in. He connected up to the computer which gave him the fault code. After consultation with Kia Technical it turns out this is the warning that there is something wrong when the particulate filter is cleansing itself of the soot build up (the book says do NOT drive more than 30 miles if this occurs) but as the light had stopped flashing & gone "solid" it was too late to discover exactly what had gone awol.

The computer was reset & I was given the all clear to carry on driving, til next time!

Just a friendly word of warning to all.

This sounds like a diesel engine problem only?

Possibly however I do believe the technician said it could also happen to petrol cars fitted with the dpf filter system, which ones those are I can't help but I'm sure someone will tell us!

Default Recurring Problem with the DPF system

Hi,

My Carens (24k) is back to the dealer AGAIN tomorrow. The engine management light has been constantly on for the best part of a month, they have reset it several times without getting it to stay out, fault code of 2002 (dpf threshold low). I am told this is due to the nature of my driving (as a cab) & not enough open road motoring. Tis true to say I'm very gentle with the car, especially with the cost of fuel as it is but surely this should not happen? They have done a manual 'burn out' of the exhaust soot but to no avail.

The local dealer is not proving to be particularly adept in their man management skills with me doing the chasing on a daily basis, they have been told this is their last chance before escalation to Kia UK.

Watch this space for further news!

Hi m8, I had the same problem on my Zaffy, was told to give it a good hammering once a month and it should clear the problem, didn't keep the car long enough to find out if it worked
Regarding your statement above, I hope you have better luck with Kia UK man management skills than I have had

Not quite! The difference between petrol & diesel engines comes into play here. In the diesel engined Carens there is a regeneration filter which traps the soot & burns it in order to keep the emissions low, this is what is malfunctioning at the mo.

Click here: Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) : Diesel particulate filters - The AA for more info.

Mark.

Carens went back to the dealer last Thu (12th June).

Yet again they did a manual regeneration, reset the ecu, took some more data for Kia UK & removed the warning light. Within 5 mins of leaving the light was back on, the promised phone call/update from the dealer on Fri 13th didn't arrive & nothing today so I have now contacted Kia UK aftersales who say they will investigate with the dealer/Kia technical & report back.......tbc!

Mark,

Please keep reporting on this - where you lead the rest of us follow (unless we can dodge it).

Richard

(now at 11 000 miles...I've seen 2 Carens working as cabs in Inverness now...but not with a smart paint job).
