New Carens Owner from the Philippines

I recently bought a diesel automatic careens in Southern Luzon, Philippines
First, the good things.
1. air-con is very good.
2. the interior is spacious.
3. plenty of gadgets
4. lighting panel is impressive.

Now the bad things.
1. As cautioned by previous reviews, the after sales service of KIA is lousy.
After a month of using the Carens on smooth roads and about 20 kms. a day, I saw three (3) wires protruding from the left front Hankook Optimo tire that came with the car. They wouldn’t replace it. They’ll tell you they’d refer it to blah-blah but after a month of this and that, nothing.
2. the suspension is too low that when you go down from an embarkment, you’ll hear a loud thump from the underchassis. It will guarantee to break your heart every time you hear it.
3. when you go up a hilly road, there is so much noise and the car is huffing and puffing. In Tagalog, hirap ang makina.(the engine is having a hard time going uphill).
4. first gear is so noisy.
5. there is side-to-side wiggling at low speeds.
6. paint is bad. There are small, white round splotches on the paint and they will not buff it for free.
7. paint easily gets scratch off no matter how well you take care of it.
8. interior gets scratch too easily compared to my Toyota. Because of the cheap plastic.
9. going back to the suspension being too low, you’ll hear a thump when you park front first in malls with barriers at the parking lot. Again, your heart …
10. pang-babae ang Carens.(a car for women) Test drive it and you’ll know what I mean.
11. there is considerable noise even when windows are closed. Try test-driving it in SLEX (Expressway), you’ll hear the sound from the barriers. Ask your children to count it by the sound they’ll hear.
12. marami pa (thre’s plenty more) but my heart bleeds for an almost one million investment.

Welcome to the forum ...I think.

My Rondo (your Carens) sounds like a different car than yours. I do have the V6 so no hesitation going up hills. It's also quiet at any speed and the smoothest 5 speed automatic transmission I've ever driven. It's way higher off the ground than my other two cars so no scraping the bottom. It doesn't wiggle from side to side and the paint is flawless. The splotches on the paint was probably done during shipping. Rain water is left sitting on a flat surface will cause it. I know that from experience as I left the bra on way too long on one of my other cars after it had rained. When I finally removed it, those splotches were all over the hood. I had to have it repainted.
The cemment barriers in the malls and other parking areas will hit the undercarriage of all cars except the 20feet off the ground off roaders. Just be careful when you park.

Sorry about your experience, but it's just not typical of the comments that most owners have been saying about their Rondo/Carens.

I have to agree with crewzin here, my diesel carens is one of the quietest smoothest and most responsive diesels ive ever driven, no problems with the paint work (except for a really annoying stone chip). Ive never heard the suspension bottoming out and the concrete kerbs in car parks are, as crewzin said, going to be struck by everything and anything. Apart from a few minor gripes, Im delighted with my carens.

hi bobi711,

I'm from Manila and me and my wife will be buying the carens within the year. This is after being satisfied with the test drive and after reading numerous good reviews both here and abroad (mostly UK reviews). A couple of guys at a local forum ( has bought the carens just after it was launched here and not one of them has any major complain about the car, special mention, not a single one of them has complained about the suspension and lack of power on inclines. your post got me thinking a bit, but as I said you are the first person I heard complaining about the carens.

Although you may be correct about kia (through columbian autocar corp) having a poor after sales service as you are not the first person I've heard complaining about it, but I've heard some branches do offer good service (special mention given to Kia Pasay). But the consensus is that, at this point at least, there had been any need for servicing of their carens yet.

So... could it be that you got yourself a lemmon and that you should talk diligently to your dealer about this? two cents.
