My trans developed a pronounced whine (at about 85K miles) is it was approaching the 4/5 shift point. Had a complete flush & replaced with full-synth. Noise was greatly reduced.
But just like Chuckey, it's baaaaaaack. I'm planning a major road trip with the car in a couple of months. Does anyone know if this noise is the voice of impending doom? Mech has said it's either planetary gears or needle bearings (or both).

Your mechanic is right, its probably going to be fine on your road trip, it may just get louder and louder. These things typically don't leave you stranded or completely blow up.
I would just drain and refill again the synthetic fluid will have loosened all the sludge and grime not done on original flush and change, and now be no better than original.
Not many auto specialists have the correct High pressure flush machines or give it the time of flush to clear all the sludge from the valves. If you can get it changed when the car is hot before fluid has chance to settle.
The noise at shift points is usually valves not clear and gear change torque slow.
The torque converters are the first to wear the friction material and these can be reconditioned for 1/3 of the price of full box.
If you have no fluid leaks the box is usually good.
