Here is some info on how to decode your VIN #.



The VIN is made up of set of unique digits that relate to specific information about your vehicle (1981 or newer). Here's what each digit stands for:

1 B 3 C D 2 4 E 5 T G 6 7 8 9 8 7
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17

1) Country of origin.
1 or 4 (USA), 2 (Canada), 3 (Mexico), J (Japan), K (Korea), S (England), W (Germany), Z (Italy).
2) Manufacturer.
A (Audi), B (BMW), 4 (Buick), 6 (Cadillac), 1 (Chevrolet), C (Chrysler), B (Dodge), F (Ford), 7 (GM Canada), G (General Motors), H (Honda), A (Jaguar), L (Lincoln), D (Mercedes Benz), M (Mercury), N (Nissan), 3 (Oldsmobile), 2 or 5 (Pontiac), P (Plymouth), 8 (Saturn), T (Toyota), V (Volvo).
3) Vehicle type.
4-8) Vehicle information.
Ex: Engine size, cylinders, carburetion, fuel type, wheel drive, tonnage, etc.
9) VIN Accuracy Check Digit.
This digit is assigned using a formula. The formula provides a way to verify the accuracy of the VIN description.
10) Model year.
J (1988), K (1989), L (1990), M (1991), N (1992), P (1993), R (1994), S (1995), T (1996), V (1997), W (1998), X (1999), Y (2000), 1 (2001), 2 (2002), 3 (2003)
11) Assembly plant.
12-17) Unique serial number for vehicle.

this decoding will not tell you the exact production date, just the year

Yeah I have had this info for about two years now. Just came across it tonight for the first time in a while.

Sorry, but the info is outdated and slightly inaccurate. But it's a decent guide for some older cars (mostly American and older Asian).

:( Vehicle traded in Dec. 2008 :(
Hopefully I'll have an Amanti again in a few years.

that is definitely old school. my spectra's VIN starts "KNA........."
