My wife has an '03 Rio which has a starting issue. I have done quite a bit in the past few years fixing this car but have yet to tackle what seems to me an electrical issue. When you turn the key to start it, it does nothing for about 2 seconds before starting right up. And seems to be getting longer as the days go by. Once started it runs fine and there are no warning lights on the dash. I hear no solenoid click or anything clicking before it starts up. We have changed the alternator almost a year ago, which was fairly routine. Other than the fact It wasn't easy getting it out from the engine compartment. I guess that could be considered electrical. I have read about many starting issues across the net but have yet to find one that has this problem. I am worried she will get stuck somewhere with the car not starting at all. This has been goin on for roughly 2 weeks so far.

Hi Folks,
Glad I found a forum for the car as it's driving me nuts!!!!
It's an 02 plate with 25k miles on it which I bought for the Mrs. It's always had a throttle hang issue which we can live with. This weekend the wife was out and about and she called to say that it was missing and power dropped off. It only appears to happen after the car has warmed up (gauge goes up to about half). It happed again whilst I went for a test spin and teh car could hardly pull itself forward. After leaving it for about half an hour it behaved as normal apart from the throttle hang, then about 3-4 miles later it started missing again.
I've read on here about them being fussy with the plugs etc. Would the leads, coil pack and plugs normally last a bit more than 25K?
From your guys experience should I do the leads and plugs at the same time or just the plugs??
Any thoughts on te throttle hang too??
Sorry for the long initial post - hope you guys can help!!
Cheers
Paul.

2003 Rio Hesitation

Hey everyone,

I have a 2003 Rio, Automatic, with 100k miles that has been well maintained. Recently, though, I've been experiencing an issue that I can only describe as "hesitation."
My problem has a few symptoms:
1) Say I'm pulling out of an intersection where I need to get out into traffic quickly. I slam on the gas, but the car sputters for a few seconds before revving high.
2) If the car is parked level, when I first turn it on and it's idling, it doesn't move for about 5 seconds or until I press the gas.
3) If I've parked in a situation where the front of the car is higher than the back, it seems like the problem is intensified and it will even stall out completely after just a few seconds if I don't hit the gas.

Otherwise, this has been a great car. I haven't had any other engine related problems and it seems to run and drive fine.

I appreciate you guys taking the time to check this out.

-Brandon

*UPDATE!* I was driving the car today and the check engine light came on. Immediately following, the problem reared it's angry head. I could barely keep the car running, at traffic lights I had to put it in neutral and rev the engine. I took the car to an AutoZone store, and the computer read the code "Cylinder 4 Misfire." Help! I'm gonna change the plugs and plug wires, but does anyone else have some suggestions?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone out their wanting to bring back the new look to their headlight lens? Very easy no work way to do this.

Clean the lenses with Windex or any other cleaner and dry. Paint the lens with Johnsons Pledge Future floor finish with a foam brush. Be careful it runs easily. Let dry, reapply as needed, not sure how long it lasts, but its so easy who cares.

Anyone worried about removing the floor finish a rag or paper towel dampened with ammonia removes it real quick.

I couldn't believe how good this works and how easy.;)

There you go!!

Is there a difference between an 03, 04 or 05 gearbox? What RPMs does an 04 or 05 run at in 3rd and 4th gear. I have an 03. Had a new clutch and gearbox put in. It now runs 500 lower RPMs in the 3rd and 4th gear than the original. I posted this question under a different heading earlier but got no replies. It runs great like new but why the difference. I had this done at an independent shop. The new gearbox had 16,000 miles on it. What rpm does your year Rio run at these speeds? I thought they may have put a different year tranny on it. Thanks

ok so here it is... 2001 rio @ 92k broke timing belt and caused major damage. i rebuilt the engine (pistons, rings, valve grind+new valves, rod and main bearings, plugs... etc.) when reassembled was running just fine but had a "whining" sound that would stop if i cracked the oil filler cap. i disconnected the neg. and pulled air box and fuel rail to check all hoses, vac lines and intake.

when i reassembled the whine is still there and now running rough. idles rough and when i hit the clutch going down the road it will idle down very low and shake and stalls about half the time. also now getting codes as follows...

325-knock sensor
301- cyl. 1 misfire
170- fuel trim malfunction (bank 1)

i am at a loss since it was running just fine when first reassembled, this all didnt start until i pulled neg and fuel rail:confused: it runs good as far as power (cruises down the road) but getting horrible mileage... anybody with any ideas?
thanks to all in advance.

Have an 02 RXV, last night had a snap sound from under dash, then experienced hard shifting gears, made it home and when backing into driveway, had to shut car off to change to reverse. Measure the travel of the cable at the release lever and only getting about 7mm travel. Does anyone have the travel limits. Course everything happens when the shops are all closed.

Thanks.

I have only had this 03 Rio for a little over a week. It replace an 05 Lincoln Aviator, so I may just be used to a different type of vehicle quality. It has 50000 miles and runs okay. When I lift off of the gas I hear a noise upfront. Maybe its the transmission, because its on the Driver front where I hear the noise. It sounds like metal spinning in metal. Only notice it when I take my foot off of the accelarator.

Hello everyone, I have spent the past week installing my aftermarket alarm system. I dont have the manual for it so I dont know how to program it. Its from aftermarket generation model # aga1201. Does anyone know where I can get the manual for it. This was my second attempt to put it due to the fact I could not find the tach wire in order for the system to know the car is running or not so I possibly lost the manual for it. I have already emailed the company and I have not heard anything from them. Its been about 5 days so far and nothing.

Im thinking of taking it out and buying another system that ONLY has the alarm, nothing else just that. Anyone know where I can find one good quality at a resonable price?
