04 Draw Short

My 04 Amanti with 27.000 miles suddenly developed a "stuttered start", as if the battery was going bad. A non-Kia shop (the car's out of warranty) said that a short was still drawing juice from the battery after shutdown. They traced it to the block control module and had to stop there because they said it's a job for Kia techs only.

The Kia mechanic found that the negative battery cable was loose on the post and ran diagnostics after tightening it. All turned up 0s. It started well at the dealer but later seemed to have a relapse. I'm not the best mechanic in the world, but it seems that a loose bat cable does not account for a continual voltage loss. I've also discovered that the seat position preset switches are inop.

I'm checking it again in the morning to see how much the battery held overnight. I'll bring the verdict then.

2005 Amanti - really need to replace timing belt/chain?

I own a 2005 Kia Amanti. Great condition, runs wonderfully. I'm at 60,010 miles, 10 miles past due on what the manual says I need to do at 60,000 miles which is replace my timing belt/chain (forget which it has).

I've never, on any vehicle, had to replace this and I've had a couple of cars where I reached 200,000 miles. However, those were non-interference type engines. I'm skeptical that my timing belt/chain will suddenly snap if not soon replaced, yet the service manual mentions this specifically. This is going to be a costly repair, of course.

My mechanic strongly is urging me that, if I choose to do this, have the water pump replaced as well because if that fails, they'll have to remove the timing belt/chain anyway so might as well kill two birds with one stone.

Thus my dilemma. I'm not even *sure* if the belt requires changing. I know the saying, "Spend $600 now, avoid $6,000 later" and that's what prompts me to do such. However, is this a real maintenance issue? Is this over-concern on Kia's part? Should I go ahead and have this done despite having no problems? If so, should I go ahead and slap in a new water pump?

Lots of questions, no certain answers on my end. All input greatly appreciated.
