hey all....im STRESSING!!!!!!! it is the timing belt and we follow the diy but now we cant get the belt on and the directions on the settings are a little difficult to understand to a newbie with no mechanical experience.So.... someone else replied with my same concerns but i dont see a reply so here goes ....the belt is off and it is missing like 7 teeth in a row, i found out i have a non-inteference engine from what everyone has been replying and im a happy about that but how do we put the belt on and at what markings...
OUR back plate has an "I" indent very easy to see and an "E" indent very easy to see (THEY ARE ARE MARKED ON THE BACKPLATE AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES OF 12 AND 10 MINUTES AFTER 12 ON THE OTHER) SO MY QUESTION IS:
on the left side do i line the i on my wheel to the i on the back plate and on the left side the e on my wheel to the e on the back plate(EVENTHOUGH THAT IS CLEARLY NOT 12'O CLOCK)
also...i see white paint or something white dot mark on the "S" AS WELL as another replyer did----WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
someone please help and soon cause my car is torn apart and im exhausted over it all ready. thank you all in advance

here are diagrams from the service manual hope this helps

loosen the tensioner, use a screwdriver or prybar and pry it back then tighten it in the back position, after the belt is in place and all marks are lined up then loosen the adjuster bolt and it should spring back to tighten belt, tighten the bolt and check the deflection loosen and use screw driver to apply pressure to the tensioner until deflection is correct, tighten tensioner and rotate engine 2 times and recheck the alignement marks

Hey I think you and my husband had the same nightmare. He is asking the exact same questions. My only real concern is that he is suppose to be fixing the water pump??!!

I'm just wondering. I need to replace my timing belt on my Sephia. How long does this usually take to do? I have mediocre auto skills.

you have to remove the timing belt to change the water pump on that engine.
