Default MPG on your Spectra/Cerato

i get about 22mpg city and 26mpg highway is this normal? im not really heavy on the gas, just normal driving. i get about 290-300 miles a tank from full to empty with the light on about 13-14 gallons. Also any tips on how i could save more gas cause up here in dc its almost 5 dolalrs for regular.

I'm getting in the mid to upper 30's, with around 400-450/tank, and an all-highway trip netting me ~480mi before the light came on.

2008 2.0 manual.

I would say 22-26 isn't normal, unless there is a lot of hills, the gas you're getting is high in ethanol (I do much worse on the 10% mixes). AC being on cuts a bit off. I would get an alignment check and make sure your tires are all good, and that you're not dragging any brakes.

I have an 06 Spec SX and get average 24mpg city and 32~34mpg when driving at just under 70mph. I find these figures to be good and totally in line and not "not normal" as claimed for this year car with a 4 speed automatic... Newer model KIAs have GDI engines and 5 and 6 speed transmissions so their mileage WILL be better than what we get on our Spectras.

You will need to replace the ECM/TCM also (if it's possible)..
As the tranny is controlled by the ECM/TCM (all in one) and probably the wiring harnesses. I don't think it would be an easy job..
I just let the cruse keep it just under 70 on my 06 when I'm watching my mileage (MPG).
My wife's 07 Spec behaves differently and it seems to have a different set of gears inside as the does not read the same shift points.
I like the way my auto shifts better than hers though.

Usually get 28+ in the city, 40+ on the freeway. 2007 5speed.

I am sure a auto ecu will work with manual trans, has with swaps I've done in the past, but never done kia motor/trans swaps in particular.

Going to a manual tranny is a lot easier (electrical/electronics) than going from a 4 speed to 5 speed automatic... the ECM/ECU would not know what to do with the "extra" gear and the shift points would all be wrong due to the different gear ratios...
That combined with a change to a "newer" ECM/ECU it would not know how to properly handle the older engine and polution items... This makes an automatic "switch" very tricky and hard to do..

An auto to manual tranny... mechanically you would need to change the flywheel, add the brake/clutch pedals (hydraulics), shifters, CV joints and drive shafts..

The Automatic ECM/ECU I believe also needs a pair of pins shorted together to tell it that the "missing" automatic tranny is "OK" and not throw a bunch of CEL errors.

yeah i guess my 05 spectra5 has some sucky gas mileage. when i do drive under 70mph on the highway i get about 27 28 mpg at the most. and my kia has problem getting up to speed also specially when im at 30mph and when i floor it it seems like it dont wanna go nowhere it will not downshift sometimes specially when im in the 3500 3600 rpm.. what i wanna know is what can i do to improve gas mileage on my kia. cause i know for a fact 22 mpg on very light foot on the mix city and highway driving on my kia is not exceptional. i do about 80 miles a day it takes me about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get from home to work which is about 35 miles away. and it takes me about 1 and half hour to get from work to home same distance. my tires pressure is at 35psi i probly need to change my plugs because i change them about 3 months ago to some cheap brand.

Lack of acceleration isn't a good sign; you'll be planting your foot more than usual and using a lot of gas.

Car is getting old and it seems that it's due for a good "tune-up". Part of that would be some decent spark-plugs, and while you're at it, think about testing the compression. Check for vacuum leaks.

I did notice that the engine burn about half a quart of oil every 3000 miles i always use 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer. i check for vaccum leak and found nothing. my car has 146xxx miles right now. and i change the plugs at 133xxx when i change the transmission and tourqe converter with a used trans with 36xxx miles on it this april 2012. Maybe i should do a compression test dry and wet just wanna see if its even all the way across. what compression should my spectra5 be at at almost 150xxx. and as far the the car burning oil it dont smoke or anything nor i have any oil leak. Rings maybe going bad?
