Please Help with 2006 Spectra Transmission

I have had my 2006 Spectra for three years now. The transmission has been flushed once since I have owned it and the fluids are at the right level.

This is what happens:
I get in my car and it runs normal, shifting from 1st to 2nd and so on. Then about 20 mins into the drive it jerks like the car is getting ready to throw up and it drops into a lower gear. If I am on the highway and this happens the RPMs go up to 4000 while going 70mph.

Please help.

Thanks,
GMac

Youy will have to go to a garage or somewhere who can scan the car to check if the computer has stored a code on the problem you have, that will help pinpoint the trouble. Have you had the cel [check engine light] come on?

P0748 VF Solenoid Valve Circuit - Open or short (GND)
You should have Powertrain warranty. My suggestion is take it to Kia Dealer for diagnosis. You might have an break in the wiring, a faulty valve in the transmission or a faulty ECM.

P0700 Trans Control Sys Malfunction = useless code from the PCM basically saying "Hey there's something wrong with the tranny" so that's out
P0748 Pres Ctrl Sola. Circuit Electrical = switch on the tranny is shorting out basically.
P0700 Pending trans control system malfunction = see above.

I really wish people would look on the KGIS site for information about their cars. It's REALLY helpful to know what your dealing with.

Though as the guy above said if it's under 100K then you can take it to the dealer and get it repaired FREE. It is under the powertrain warranty.

I had the same problem last year on my 06 spectra. Told the dealer about it. They took it in. He said there were no codes stored and they couldn't replicate the problem. He said that I would probably have to wait until something actually broke before they could do anything about it. Now that weather is cooler I haven't noticed it so much. I'm just waiting for something to break.

I've got the EXACT same problem with my '06 S5 - when accelerating to get on the highway or passing the car downshifts, then shifts to O/D for a split second only to jerk really hard and slip back to third. It remains here until I either stop the car and turn off the engine for a few minutes or reset the computer by unplugging the neg. terminal. I got the 0700 and 0748 codes myself 2 months ago but I cleared them and they've yet to come back. BUT the problem still occurs - stuck in third gear. And nothign i do changes it - when this happens I can be at a stop light and shift into L, 2nd, D but the car remains in 3rd. It will respond to park, Neutral and Rev but is accompanied by a hard 'thud' when shifting into these gears during this problem.

I'd gladly take the car in for the warranty since it's only at 66k miles but i'm the second owner - according to Kia, yes the cars are covered for 100k miles BUT if you are the second owner of the vehicle that drops to only 12k miles! WTF?

I have a 2006 spectra with some problem. went through the diagnoses that Aldata recomend but dont have a lap scope to do it correctly. i went ahead and put a control pressure selenoid in it and it didnt help. Im taking it in to a dealer to have them diagnose the problem. I'll let all of you know what I find out.

Let us know what you find out, tt2!

Mine hasn't done it in a while, but what it DOES like to do is raise RPMs by 100 or so back and forth periodically after going 70mph. The temporary solution I've found so far is to just floor it for a second and make it downshift to third, then it goes back into fourth normally and stays that way for a while....made last week's trip to Phoenix and back last week more bareable.

I KNOW this isn't a fix, but a way to deal in the meantime....

a little FYI

I found out that a lot of places out there (not the dealership) doing trans flushes out there are ripping people off. The kia transfluid is a full synthetic type fluid. I have the same problem with mine. I had it serviced myself and they put in dexII with an additive that is suposed to make it spIII type fluid. WRONG!!!! I than took it to another place to have it done with the correct fluid and lucky for me I was watching them. They assured me they were going to use the spIII fluid but while watching them I saw the mechanic pick up some addatives. I then caught them trying to rip me off. I then called kia about getting it done. Get this they were even cheaper by $50 to get it done there. I told them of the problem. Thay said they can diagnos it if I wanted them to but of course they dont go into the inside of them. They say they have never had a computer failure in one so its probly inside the tramsmission. The only thing they would do is to replace it. Get this too. A remaufactured unit from the dealer is about $950.00 . Believe me thats not a bad price. Ive been a mechanic for 20 years. I have rebuilt a lot of tranmissions too. They mine acts the same way tooand all the other things i here it sounds like a fluid pressure problem. I put a control pessure selinoid on mine just by chance it might fix it. It didnt do it. I did buy some trans honey type stuff at auto zone and now seems to go alot farther now before it goes into limp mode(shift down into 3rd). I figure if its gone what could it hurt. I might try to pull mine out and tear it down to see if it can be a simple seal problem. But if I cant see anything bad I"ll just replace it. Why? Because if its in the seninoid pack that will cost $500.00 for the part and then i might as well put in a new one. I'll keep everyone informed what happens. Good luck out there. Oh and dont always think the dealers will rip you off. They all have done lots of price restructuring to get people to come back for the service. Plus the do use OEM parts.:)

spectra code P0748 problem fixed

Ok yall, Took my kia to the dealer and had the transflush done with the correct fluid. It did not fix the problem though. At that point I was really getting tired of this problem. I got to thinking. It sets the code that say the pressure control selenoid is open or shorted to ground. Well as I said before I tried replacing it and it didnt work either. Well if it senses a shot or open its not actualy having a pressure problem. I then tried something to try to trick the computer. I took the original selenoid that came out of the transmission. And then pulled the wires from the connector going into the transmission. I didnt cut them. They can be pulled out if you use a jewellerys screwdriver very carefullly. I took the to wires (pin #9 & #10) and taped them directly to the selenoid and taped the selenoid to the wireing warness so it would not touch a ground. I cleared the codes and test drove it. Guess what ive been driving a week or so and it has not did it once. The only thing I can think of is that the harness inside the trans must be getting hot and expanding causing an open in the circuit. The harness is made like a printed circuit board. GM used to make there instrument panells the same way and they had the problem of the circuits breaking after a period of years. I called KIA to get a price on the part. Its $155.00 for the harness. They of course said well we have never sold any of those. I then reminded him that he once told me they dont work on the inside of the unit they just replace them. They then agreed by all the symptoms that it sounds very logical. I have not yet purcassed one yet. Im still a little tapped out because of the cost of the selenoid and two transfushes. When I do replace the harness I will post it here.

is the selanoid internal or external and can yuou post a vid on how you did it. it would be very helpfull..and yeah just like my kia alsoall my plugs that goes in the trans, the clip that locks the harness inplace is broken its like that since i got it.. but if yuou could get videos or pics and let me know if the selanoid is internal meaning i have to take the trans apart to get to it or external.. thanks in advance and thanks for the email i REALLY appriciate it..

'06 Sportage 2.0L stuck in 3rd gear, DTC P0885 is set, and slams into Reverse and Drive very harsh. Sounds similar to "thisoneguy27's post. Has anyone else had anything like this occur? Please help, and there doesnt seem to be any info on this problem.

get your tranny replaced i have or had a 2003 spectra and had 133000 miles on it took it in before the warrenty was up had them check everything including the tranny and now the tranny went out costs almost 3000 grand to replace so its not worth it so i scraped it for 1000 and bought another car ill never never buy another kia again. they are affordable until you have to fix them and they dont last long all the trannys are bad in them and most of the engines are crap as well. oh well i learned my lesson only buy american.
