I have a 2005 Kia Spectra that, in the last 6 weeks, has been hard to start after I get gas. The check engine light is on and reads as a large emissions leak.
I've taken it to a mechanic, who first replaced the spark plugs/wires ($400), which did not solve the problem. I returned and they replaced the fuel pump ($500), which also failed to solve the problem. After getting a smoke test today, they said I need to replace the purge control solenoid and vent control solenoid, which would be around $400.
I know nothing about cars and no offense to the mechanics, who seem like nice people, but a few questions have come to my mind and I am seeking advice:
-Is it easy to replace purge control and vent control solenoids? My dad, who does know some things about cars, may be able to help if the repair doesn't need any specialized equipment.
-Are the costs I have paid (or possibly will pay) for parts and labor pretty standard for most mechanics? For example, the estimate I got today was about $130 for a canister purge solenoid, but a lazy Internet search had them listed at about $45.
Before I add another $400 on top of the $900 I've spent, I was just curious to see other people's perspectives. I've you have any comments, I'd appreciate hearing them!
