DVD sound connection to Stereo head unit

As I have mentioned in the introduction forum I have a Sedona with dealer fit DVD option.

Problem is I have a 21 month old son who won't wear the headphones required for listening to his favorite Fimbles DVD. So I spoke to my dealer who said they could fit a FM modulator so the sound could be played through the Radio/CD head unit via an FM signal. OK I thought but was unsure and the price they want to charge me seemed a little high, so I visited the local car hi fi specialist who has supplied me 2 cd changer systems in the past, to see what they thought.

They recomended not to go down the modulator route as it is plagued with crackly sound and basically not a very good setup but offered an option based around the current setup. I have a JVC head unit which has a cd changer input that requires a special JVC connection in order to play a standard phono output from the DVD player.

Anyway I got hold of the connection unit and a set of phono leads and plugged it all in to find the JVC head unit will not switch to the cd changer option so hense no sound. The sound is getting to the fancy JVC connection but not to the unit it would seem.

Does anyone else have any experience on this type of setup? What can be done to get the head unit to recognise the DVD player? Is an FM modulator really that bad? Any ideas would be useful. Or is it send the lot back to the shop.

Edited to say the setup I have created is the same as the one in the JVC catalogue but with a Centurion DVD player not JVC.

So you have the JVC mp3 unit?

I think this might just have an AUX IN on it?
If so you could just take the 2 phonos of the back of the DVD player, and put them into the AUX IN phonos, and it will come through the car stereo.

But
Head unit is a JVC model KDG502. It does not have an aux in, only back & front aux out and a connection for the JVC changer units. You need to use JVC part KSU057 connected to the changer connection on the unit which provides an aux in, that phono leads will connect to but I cant get the head unit to identify that its there (Changer/CD button only goes to CD will not switch to changer). All this is set up as per JVC catalogue and info off their website but still does not work. Is there anything I am not doing right????

Any thoughts/opinions on the modulator route?

Also contacting JVC to see if they know why its not recognising the signal.

Going to try again this weekend when I have a bit more time.

I think I have the solution to the problem

The KG502 head unit comes with the cd changer input factory set to work with, yes you have guessed it a cd changer. In order to get it to work with the ksu057 adaptor for a DVD player you need to set this input on the head unit to line input.

Easy you would think. The JVC manual points you to page 32 and the details of how to do this or does it

No it tells you you have to change it but not how, unless I am being completely thick or what I am at a loss so.

I have emailed JVC UK for an answer and await ther reply

Problem Solved

Eventually worked out how to change the head unit settings as per my last post. How to do this is not clear in the JVC manual but after re reading it the penny dropped and how to do it is actually listed on page 29. Not that the relevant pages point you here.

Any way took the dash out connected up the cables routed them round to under the drivers seat where the DVD player is. I installed some splitters so I can still use the headphones if wanted. Switched it all on and HEY PRESTO, I am now able to hear the DVD sound through the radio/cd player using its line in connection.

Whilst doing this I also turned the dvd player through 180 degrees. It comes supplied from the dealer with the tray/door facing the drivers footwell. This is OK but it dosent allow you to change a disc easily without the driver getting out of the vehicle. Now any of the rear passengers can change the disc with ease.

JVC uk absolutley useless. Did not reply to my emails or phone calls (not that I needed them in the end.) :P

FTI, yeah FM modulators can be pretty nasty.
