Unhappy 2001 Kia Rio smells weird

Ok,Here goes,
I am a student so I bought a second hand car for obvious reasons,I can't afford a new one, anyways it happens to be a 2001 Kia Rio RS,I got it on August 21st I believe and it has been working great up until yesterday, when I was driving home from school yesterday it COMPLETELY over heated like waaay past the H and the check engine light came on,so I got it to a nearby garage and they put water in the coolant place(i think it's a radiator??) and he told me that I don't seem to have any leaks and the thermometer probably stuck, anyways, the temperature dropped and I drove the car the rest of the way home with no more mishaps.I went out tonight and bought some prestone(antifreeze/coolant) and a new thermometer(yes I drove my car, which i probably shouldnt have) and althoguh it didn't over heat(thankfully) and even more thankfully the check engine light went off I experienced a brief moment of gutlessness, like no power at all,and then that fixed itself and now when I got home it smells REALLY bad,but not in the front of the car, just in the middle and back of the car,one side smells like something burning(the back drivers side) and the back passengers side smells a bit different like burning rubber or something.yes im naive and know nothing about cars, this is my first car and id greatly appreciate any help or tips I can get because im almost in tears,I need my car to drive to school every day(45 min drive)please help, thanks so much
