driving pet peeves

I figured I'd post a list of my favourite pet peeves I see other drivers doing all too often

1) people who make right turns into the left hand lane and left turns into the right hand lane (assuming a multi-lane road). Its freaking epidemic in the town I live near, I even see cops doing it. I've had people honk their horn at me when I make a left into the left hand lane while they are making a right into the same lane when the right hand lane is perfectly clear. It's like they aren't strong enough to turn the wheel another half turn.

2) people who don't turn their lights on in rainy or murky weather. I blame the mfgs as much as the drivers for this as in most cars now they turn on the DRLs and the dash lights and that's all. So Joe dough head driver gets in, starts it up and sees his dash lights on and figures his lights are on. Meanwhile the car is totally dark from behind. DRLs should include the REAR running lights as well.

In addition, if the wipers are activated (any mode) the full headlight package should turn on automatically in my opinion. Most drivers are just too stupid or inattentive to be left with this decision.

3) left lane bandits.....the self righteous turds who figure they are doing the limit so you behind can just piss off. But even in town it seems like the right lane is cursed or something. I've seen a line of 10-15 cars all lined up at a light and the right lane has nobody in it. Great way to make time in traffic.

4) people that leave turning on their turn signals to the last minute. Like it is some mechanical pre-requisite for the car to turn. A good rule of thumb?....Signal BEFORE you brake for a turn. that way the people behind you won't be wondering why your brakes are on. Well in most cases, we have already figured out that you are turning long before you turn on the signal. Turn signals are suppose to advise other drivings of your intentions right?

5) people that appear to have no idea what a Yield sign means. In Ontario, a Yield sign means you may proceed at 25 km/h if the way is clear, otherwise you MUST STOP, not speed up to beat the guy you should be yielding to. Again, epidemic.

Feel free to add to the list.

Wow, where to start? Got all day ? Your #4 is one of my biggest peeves Sloppy.

1. Idiots that insist on sitting one foot off your back bumper; particularly when there is absolutely no way for you to get out of their way because of traffic. Doesn't seem to matter if you're doing 50 kmph or 120 kmph. Big rigs on the highway doing this should have their licenses yanked for a year.

2. Fools who insist on passing you at 80 kmph despite the solid center yellow line and the 40 kmph school zone limit.

3. Merge lane runners who insist on staying in the merge lane till the very last second and then trying to force their way in causing traffic to come to a stop. Add to this, the jerks on the highway that actually go into the on and off ramps to get ahead and then pull the stunt described above.

4. The seemingly common belief that a "stop" sign actually means "yield".

5. Drivers waiting to make a left-hand turn at a green traffic light that sit behind the white line instead of edging out into the intersection so only they can turn when the light turns yellow.

6. The lack of traffic cops stopping these things from happening. If people consistently got tickets for doing this stuff, they'd stop. Kind of like how photo radar slows down speeders and red light cameras make people stop at red lights.

1) Drivers that pass me, then go slower than I was was going in the first place.
2) On multi-lane highways, fast drivers in the slow lane that slow down to match the speed of the car in front, and then move to the next lane causing that traffic to brake for them.
3) Brake-aholics: People that are continually hitting their brakes because they are either too close or too timid.

Many of mine have already been stated...

However, here are a couple more...

1. "Cool" drivers who think its great to sit low in the driver's seat so they can't see a thing around them.
2. Older drivers who don't want to use a pillow so they can actually see the road. (By the way, I am an older, shorter driver who won't buy a car unless the seat height can be adjusted and my wife does use a pillow.)
3. Fast lane turtles who won't even drive the speed limit when there are no other cars on the road.
4. Righteous drivers om the right lane who travel the same speed as slow drivers in the left lane so you can't even pass them.
5. Movie stars that flip you just because you happened to glance at them. (This actually happened to me years ago when Cheech was driving his Merc).
6. Side seat and rear seat drivers.....
7. Eco nerds who constantly tell you that you are driving 1 mph over the speed limit.

Now... all of you who are represented above can flame at me.....

People who are setting in a line at a stop sign across from you, who believe that their entire line has the right of way over you.

People who come to a near stop on the freeway/Interstate as they "approach" their exit (instead of decelerating/braking after they enter the exit lane).

People who come to a near stop making a right hand turn at an intersection. Do you really feel like your vehicle is going to tip over if you make the turn at a little faster pace? I had a passenger one time tell me that she heard the cars body dragging the pavement as I made a sharp turn in my old Chevette. I had to get her out of the car and explain some simple mechanics/physics to illustrate how in order for the body to drag the car would have to have been on its side with the all wheels no longer in contact with the road.

I guess I'm slow today but I am not able to envision what you're describing. Can you say it another way?

I had to read it about 20 times, but what he's describing is an intersection where you and another vehicle are turning from "Road A" onto "Road B". Road B is a multi-lane road. You turn left from Road A, and since you are turning left, you take the left lane of Road B, as that is the first legal lane. Meanwhile, the other driver across the street from you turns right from Road A onto Road B at about the same time, and while they should take the right lane, as it is the first legal lane for them, they want to be in the left lane for whatever reason. Cue horn honking and/or accident.

In fact, this is exactly how I found my way into a Kia. Driving home from work a few months ago, there were two cars in front of me: One car turned left out of a business driveway, while another one turned right out of another driveway. They both tried to take the left lane, which I was traveling in as I had just passed a slower vehicle, and ended up hitting each other. I anticipated this early enough that I was already stopped by the time they hit, but I had another vehicle behind me that wasn't paying close enough attention. That car hit my car, and knocked me into the other two, totaling my car. I was really annoyed because the whole thing was so stupid, but I was kind of lukewarm about that car anyway, so in retrospect I'm kind of glad it happened. (No injuries.)
