Default Roof rack for 2012 Optima

Hi all,

I do not have an Optima yet but may be in the process of getting a EX w/ Premium package soon.

I'm an avid cyclist and have both a trunk mounted bike rack and a Thule roof rack system on my current car. The roof rack is mainly used for long drives and camping trips (when I would prefer the trunk to be accessible at all times). I do not leave the roof rack on for long time periods -- it really sucks up MPG.

I had an interesting test drive yesterday where the salesman said these cars aren't meant to haul stuff on the roof and the sunroof (if activated) could interfere with a roof rack. I was thinking, if anything, the flap that pops up when the sunroof is opened (see below pic) might be a problem if I get a fairing/spoiler for the rack.

He tells me my options would be a tow hitch (though there is no tow hitch available except online) or a trunk rack.

What do you guys think?

Rack Attack says Thule has a fit kit for the Optima and the rack will not interfere with a sunroof.

The problem could be that the pano roof on the Optima opens up and over the top of the roof, not in like most. I assume a roof rack would interfer with the operation of the roof.

I suspect that the salesman was like many, talking through an alternate opening.

I've had the Fit Kit for my Optima on order for about a month. Its expected to arrive at my local dealer any day now, but I'm on a business trip ATM, so can't pick it up for a few weeks.

My previous Audi A3 had a sunroof that opened like the Optima's over the rear glass roof section. The Thule spoiler also worked fine (but was mostly a waste of money) and rested on the fixed glass in front of the opening roof. There was no problem at all with the roof clearing my rack. Just be sure that any bolts used for clamping adapters aren't overly long (the supplied Thule bolts work fine).

I've put both my wife's 53 cm and my 64 cm road frames in the rear seat simultaneously (wheels off) throughout a 10-day trip, and made a seat cover for the rear so the chains wouldn't soil the upholstery. Great way to take the bikes on a vacation, as we usually do, have the entire trunk available for luggage, and not screw up the aerodynamics. Still need the rack for our sea kayaks, and the occasional ski trip when I also need all four seats for passengers.

Default I was looking at this also.....

I have a thule roof rack (400 aero foot) that I use for my surfboards and was looking at a fit kit for the optima. Thule has one (1629), but apparently this fit kit will only work with the 480/480r foot packs. Thus, instead of having to spend just $75 for the fit kit, I have to spend $380 for the entire system. What a racket.

I agree with it (roof racks) being a racket, but now that I have the new setup for the Optima, it fits very well, is more secure, and easier to use than previous Thule racks on other cars. The new Fit Kit keeps the load bars level front-to-back, and the wrench to install is built into the towers, then covered with locking panels. (If you spend even more money for lock cylinders!) I've used it several times for skis and more recently with my 17' sea kayak, which benefits in stability at speed by using the tow hook in front for a bow tie-down, and the loop under the trunk in back.

Nope. Many of my rack accessories only fit the "square" Thule load bars.

Default Any pictures, please ?

Would you like to paste 1 or 2 pics of your car with its Thule rack on ? I'm shopping for the same rack but not sure if I'm gonna like the fit.

Any room for deflector ?

Thanks

Ben

Here are some photos of the Thule rack with "square bars" on my 2011 SX. The fit is better than any previous roof racks on other cars. As you can see, a deflector would fit fine, but one that I used on a previous car didn't do much good.
